BTW, even communists can move (sometimes). Domestic COLAs aren’t gonna happen.
East Germany, Cuba, North Korea, prior Soviet Union .. I'm sure there are exceptions but, to my recollection, most of the communist States erected walls and barbwire to keep people from leaving.

Domestic base COLA not going to happen. What would benefit most UAL pilots?

How about a "commuter allowance". This would cost you money. Positive space domestic commute. Check that box for a fixed amount of money each month. 100 dollars per commute? 50?

Even the JR 777 Captain on reserve in PHX would rather sit around his pool in boxers and black socks at home, than in his crashpad.

What percentage of UAL pilots commute? Years ago I heard it was 2/3. Now I don't know. If it benefits the majority of pilots, why not take a look outside the box.

I don't like UPS's system. Most pilots would just pocket the money, and still jumpseat.

Since most UAL domiciles are not affordable, why not make commuting easier? Maybe give up a few bucks per hour, for all of us, and give all of us the option?

Right after that happened, this forum would be full of pilots complaining about commuting in coach. And how we need ALPA to "fix" our commuter policy. LOL

Just to add some as yet unmentioned info, part of the GUM stipend is offset by the way its trips are credited. We have multiple 2day (overnight) trips that credit less than 10 hours, some as low as 5. Granted, this does not impact pilots off all seniority equally, but many of us are working 2 day trips that would be worth 10 hours in SFO for 5-8 hours a piece. That loss of 2-5 hours per trip basically pays for the stipend, if you do the math.

Commuting is a choice. I would not give up a penny for this.

For some.

Until the next recession when the economy spasms and pilots are -

Bumped,
Furloughed,
Your ride gets parked in a different domicile (think 747 ORD, 777 IAH),
Your domicile gets closed (HNL, SEA),
You live in CLE,
etc and meanwhile -

Your spouse has a great job,
Your kids are in a good spot,
You're underwater on your house,
You have an elderly parent that you're caring for,
You have a side business,
etc.

Then it's not so simple. But, it sure sounds definitive.

Great article, thank you!

I knew the metrics were skewed by measurement, but since I never bring up politics or religion at work it sure is fun to occasionally (and irresponsibly) troll my conservative friends. If people take themselves as seriously in person as they do on this board, wow! James and Hoss get it. Your polite response shows that you do too.

I spent most of my adult life in Texas, it's an awesome state. California is great, too. Both have totally screwed up political systems and it makes me laugh out loud to hear my bubba friends carp about how horrible it must be to live with the liberals, then hear my Birkenstock-wearing friends whine about those horrible, conservative, racist rednecks and their horrible state.

People need to lighten up.

You're correct, but I doubt anyone in Cuba (probably NK, for that matter) knows or cares who moves where within their borders and we're talking about a domestic COLA. Are we really going further down this rabbit hole? Domestic COLA ain't gonna happen... nor should it.

No disagreement here .. my whole point is that we have the freedom to choose where we live. I was based in San Francisco for 18 years, and with the exception of my time in the military, lived in California for my entire life. I left California about 4 years ago, by choice, and that option is available to every pilot on the seniority list. The same people that are crying for a domestic COLA would be crying foul when they got bumped out of Base by the seniority shift that would occur. Maybe they should also demand a bid freeze to the base as well to protect their relative seniority.
