I honestly didnt feel that vibe. As long as you wore a suit, and were well groomed, you were fine.

Now for the actual interview...

1 guy wore a red tie the day 4 of us interviewed. He was the one NOT to get hired.

I didn't get a real answer. It was still awesome and I'm glad I got to go.
I think their reasoning is two fold. They want you to pick them because you want to be a United pilot. How is someone from the outside looking in supposed to know what the culture is like without seeing it. Even being told from someone on the inside isn't really enough. Working at a United Express airline for a decade doesn't even do it justice. Second is the fact that there are some people out there with great resumes but zero interpersonal skills that they need to weed out.

The United culture is a moving target and we are about to replace half of our pilots within the next 10 years so they care about who they reshape the culture with. They want people to understand the airline and to protect what we have here. We don't care what color your tie is or how much of a nerd you are as long as you can shine yourself up and be friendly for a few hours... which is the majority of our job.

This isn't Delta and if you ever get the chance to interview at another airline or have in the past you will see an immediate difference in their culture. We have the most women as a % of our pilot group of any airline. Almost double that of Delta and American. The good ol boy club died a lot longer ago here. We have more widebodies covering more of the planet than our domestic competition. Our union is very much involved with almost every aspect of our company. It also has a history book worth of contentious issues from the past. I think it will make us stronger with future market turmoil and stopping our board and management from making short term gains at the expense of long term profitability (scope.)

If you are qualified and capable they really do want you and they want you to feel like you have some sense of us before you decide. Good luck!

Aquaticus,

Thank you for taking the time to write this. We certainly appreciate it. As one of the fortunate pilots invited, I can say that the event was a great opportunity for us to confirm what we already knew, United’s culture is one of the things that, in my opinion, sets them apart from all other airlines. I am definitely looking forward to the opportunity to join the United team soon.

This right here. Thanks Aquaticus as well. The event was well worth it and sealed the deal for where I want to be.

Good luck to you guys. That’s a great feeling you have right now. Hopefully they get you the Hogan soon to keep the momentum rolling.

I agree! When I interviewed back in 2013 I saw a fairly large stack of what were clearly thank you cards on Gloria’s desk, unopened. I wondered if they we ever opened?
