737 reserve CA

Quick question for any CA on the guppy in EWR or SFO.

Do you normally just get guarantee, or is it easy to pick up time and get to 80+ hours a month?

Trying to decide my next seat!

Thanks

cadetdrivr 07-10-2018 09:59 AM

Make sure you ask any respondents if they are commuters or local.

Two entirely different ballgames on narrowbody RSV.

Very true statement!

I’m local and more than happy to fly less than guarantee. IAH 737 CA.

Doesn’t mean I don’t cherry pick trips when it’s obvious I’m going to fly. I’d just rather fly 50 and get guarantee than work harder.

I’m a commuter, so I want to know if there’s flying to pick up or will I be stuck on a min guarantee every month

Noel Cognito 07-10-2018 11:55 AM

80+ hours is very doable in SFO

Noel (relatively junior SFO RSV commuter)

Wafu3939 07-10-2018 11:57 AM

Okay, thanks
Don’t see any reason to sit around SFO when I could be making money.

Commuting

737

Reserve

That's a biblical apocalypse combination.

And that's even before adding SFO or EWR EDCTs to the mix.

Deafguppy 07-11-2018 02:37 AM

Just don’t expect to sit long call much.

Indeed. Commuting to reserve is nuts in general, but if a guy needs that fourth stripe, I guess he can have at it.

Noel Cognito 07-11-2018 06:25 AM

Both are a choice (vice a need) in my case: commuting and the 4th stripe. Couldn’t be happier with either decision😎

Wafu3939 07-11-2018 11:00 AM

I couldn’t care less about a 4th stripe
After 2 furloughs and 14 years on the street I’m in this for the money!

How often do you get beat up on reserve in IAH? How many red eyes do you do? I can hold CA IAH but I’ve heard horror stories.

1. A lot of commutes aren’t bad, to me living somewhere I don’t want to be like Jersey is nuts. 2. With aggressive pick up and the new reserve rules a lot of guys do just as well as jr line holders.

IAH as a base is terrible. The red eyes to IAH are the worst across the whole system. An IAH reserve gets abused. I wouldn't wish IAH, as a CA or FO, on anyone (that's senior to me)

You don’t have to live in jersey. There are plenty of amazing, diverse places to live within a couple hours of EWR.

There are reasons to live there. Cost of living is top of the list. I was there for a year and a half but left in 2014. I didn’t like the flying or the area but won’t disparage anyone if that’s what they want. Your $$ goes twice as far there as EWR, 3x as LAX, and 5x as SFO.

That is what is awesome about this job, choices. One man’s trash is another’s treasure.

skiutah 07-13-2018 10:57 AM

How about 737 reserve Capt in LAX? Anyone have info on receive life here? I live local.
Thanks
