ZED boarding priority

I posted this question generally in the major section under a different topic but was hoping to hear from some united guys on the topic. I am an offline guy who will be buying a ZED for an international United flight. I only have the option to purchase a ticket/list for the economy cabin. Hypothetically if economy is full but there are business seats available does that mean I get left behind due to my economy zed or will I be able to occupy a business seat? Appreciate the responses.

Not a United employee, but I do have united benefits with my regional. I saw zed fare people get left behind in Paris coming back to the US. No economy seats available, but maybe 4 or 5 business.

If you can't buy a business seat...

Are you a pilot?

If so, try to take to the Captain at the gate. Hit and miss, but some Captains might upgrade you.

Sorry, but we have absolutely no say in who gets upgraded. In fact, we get in trouble with the F/A's if we mess with their world. Now, if you can get a coach seat, after the door is closed, then maybe, but again, that is only with the F/A cooperation.

I know that doesn't help, sorry.

The agent won't be able to give you a boarding pass except for coach... so you'll have no way to ask the crew for an open seat in BC.

My experience from Europe is that the gate agents are not gonna give you an upgrade into business class. Usually they upgrade status guests from coach into business and then you will get the free coach seat.

You will need to list for the correct cabin. The airline views it as stealing when an employee upgrades out of order. It happens but more so after you are on board and very discreetly.

Thanks for the responses. I just needed what to expect to have the appropriate back up plan.
