The company doesn’t even look at who an applicant’s parents, aunts, uncles, cousins twice removed, etc. are and they shouldn’t. Review the applicant on their personal merits. They are not responsible for nor should they be held accountable for the sins of the father. Being the offspring of a schmuck doesn’t make you one any more than being the offspring of an upstanding parent guarantees that you are upstanding as well.

Actual flying ability is not required.

Once my LOR was submitted by the CP, things happened very quickly. I received the welcome to the process, I had the phone interview to verify information on my app, then an email with a link for the Hogan, then I took the Hogan and heard back that I passed it within a day, and then I was able to schedule my interview. That was in October of 2013.

Same same GI

Gee I wonder where Oscar ever got the impression that dud pilots exist.

No standardized test or hour long interview even comes close to years of observation. Second to observation is the resume. I think tests like “the Hogan” (which I thankfully never had to take) are a joke and interviews, while necessary, are only marginally effective.

What defines the best these days. For a company like UAL, DAL, or AA who can afford to be picky about who they hire, what is the best? Are we talking personalities that fit a particular corporate culture, total time, military service record, community service...? There are still lots of very high time regional and corporate pilots and very competent military pilots out there. Those in charge of hiring simply want to fill seats with people who will do well, fit in, and be long term assets to the company. What defines the best when a 15,000 hr regional captain, a 10,000 hour regional captain, an 8,000 corporate pilot, and a 20+ year military pilot apply for the same seat? I’m not trying to be sarcastic. Serious question.

That's a subjective question with no right answer.

Objectively though, we are retiring a lot of scab pilots. We don't want them making recommendations prior to leaving.

We can write a recommendation. That's as close as you're going to get.

Seriously....12,500 guys can't all pick someone for an interview.

Do the math on that one. It's a ridiculous suggestion.

How many of the "best" live in the southeastern USA ... then take a look at the United domiciles and say I'll wait for DAL, AA or maybe SW...

I know everyone has their own priorities, but if you plan to live in/near base it's an honest QOL question....
