Passport renewal

I'm returning to United from furlough in February. My passport doesn't expire till June 2020, so per FOM it's good for flying thru December 2019 so it still has another 6 months of validity on it.

Should I try to get it renewed while going through FTC initial qualification in Denver, where I don't need a passport till I hit IOE, or is it practical to wait till closer to December to renew?

If I wait till later, do most pilots just renew it using the one-day processing method in-person at one of the passport centers in a hub city, or opt for the expedited mail-in renewal option which "promises" 2-week turnaround? It seems the normal mail-in option (4-6 week turnaround) is a non-option for us. Either mail-in option seems to require dropping trips or using vacation/LOA.

Thanks

If you are Houston based, I did mine on an off-day. Had to make an appointment in advance. Relatively painless, but it does take most of the day. My appointment, as I recall, was around 1000, and I wasn't done until about 1500.

Not sure about Denver, but I think I would wait until training was done to mess with it.

I received my CJO in December and am awaiting the email for a class date. My passport expires in August so I figured while I’m waiting, it would be an excellent opportunity. I just sent my passport off on Friday the 4th of Jan and I just got an email saying I will have it back this Saturday, 12 Jan. I requested expedited service which advertised 2-3 weeks door to door so I was pleasantly surprised that it only took 8 days.

I will double down on the Houston Passport Office. My previously made appointment was at 9 am, my new passport was handed to me at 1:30 pm. Wife and I went to lunch and strolled around..... painless. :)

I just renewed mine at the Chicago passport office. I know the CPO will provide you with an expedite letter to submit with your renewal, but I did not obtain one. I did take my United ID, and they used that as basis to expedite my application for a same-day renewal. I dropped everything off in the morning and picked up my new passport at 3pm. I submitted an expense report for parking and an hour of add-pay for having to show up to the passport office in person. Everything was approved, even the add-pay. Everyone at the passport office was super nice, and I dare say my experience was actually pleasant.

Denver passport office can turn same day. Once back on property the company will give you an expedite letter and pay for the renewal and fee’s. Easy to do while at TK.

The key is to coordinate with your CPO, and they will give you the expedite letter, which gets you in the door for same-day service....but slots are limited; ie, they’ll guve you several days to choose from.

My only comment about the Chicago office is I’m glad it’s every ten years.
