Yeah there was. The RIO that flew with Maverick after Goose's death to help him get back in the saddle. That same actor was Chuck Norris's sidekick on Texas Ranger. Don’t mess with Chuck Norris's sidekick... Based on this lack of knowledge you must be racist [emoji57] |

Yes, airplane. A satirical movie that I'm sure tons of kids were inspired from. I did forget about Iron eagle, but hopefully that's not the only point you took from my post. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G891A using Tapatalk http://topgun.wikia.com/wiki/Marcus_Williams You are bigoted against RIO’s.... |

Sure, an airplane is just a machine, but our society is not. These organizations, as someone said above, are primarily about finding young people from certain specific demographics where, historically, their exposure to the aviation industry is low. Introducing them to the idea that, yes, they too can be pilots even though none of the pilots on TV or movies look like them (well, except for Denzel in "Flight." Oh, an I guess there was that wso, "Sun Down."). Introduction to aviation (school visits, camps), mentorship, scholarship, and resume help are all huge for someone who is a first generation aviator. By the way, those same things are offered to youth of EVERY demographic by these organizations, the point is just who they target. When ALPA pilots in schools starts going to inner city Detroit, Cleveland, etc then I'll be ready to hear your argument that these organizations are not needed. The part you see, the job fair, is a very small piece of what these organizations are about. Perhaps, instead of grumbling and complaining online, you should JOIN and VOLUNTEER for one. Maybe, just maybe, your perspective will shift. I can assure you that your help would be appreciated at any of the organzations you're so offended by.

To the few who say why can’t they have an “everybody” job fair. It’s a very simple reason..... MONEY. These minority groups all have paid members which gives the organization enough money to organize a job fair with enough turn out for major airlines to show up to. If you can organize the white American male aviation group, get tens of thousands of paid members then you too can create a job fair. Until then shut up and go to the ones that the gays, blacks and women are willing to pay to organize.

I’m not offended by the groups or any of the people that they represent. I’m saying that qualifications should matter and there shouldn’t be a sliding scale of what those standards are. I really don’t care what percentage a certain group is in society. That doesn’t mean that the same balance should be forced, or even attempted, at schools or places of employment. Hire the highest experienced and qualified applicant that you can. If they all turn out to be from one particular group, then so be it. I really don’t care what that group is. Just get rid of the double standard. The minimums shouldn’t be at one level for one person, and another for someone else. We seem to want equality, but don’t want to give up certain carve outs that have been established. Let’s either have one standard, or at least be open and say we want to hire X from this group and Y from another.
Your resume speaks volumes about you. Saying you're a member of ANY organization, and ran some type of youth program SHOULD get you some extra points. That's just my opinion, but please let me know so that I can tell all the minorities and women stuck at regionals when I commute... That they just need to include a picture or something because there is a sliding scale, and qualifications don't matter. If, that's in fact what you're saying. Which would explain why all of the new hire class pictures are full of nothing but minorities and women, right? Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G891A using Tapatalk |
I’m simply saying that race, gender, orientation, or whatever shouldn’t matter either way. It doesn’t matter who I fly with as long as they’re professional and can do the job well. I was also talking more generally than just here at United. There are examples of universities having different admissions standards and also with employers. Books have been written condemning and praising the practice. I just think that equality and not partaking in discrimination begins with not bunching us into groups. A persons character should define them, not race, gender, or some other label. Anyway, this is going to end up drifting into the margins, the jokes will start, and the thread will close.
