Hey, I’m considering United and I was just wondering how long will it take to become a first officer on either the 787 or the 777?

As of right now, you might be able to be a bottom dweller on reserve after 3-5 years if you are willing to be based in SFO. A longer wait in all other domiciles. You will be on reserve for a while.

Just because you can hold the 777 or 787 doesn’t necessarily mean you will become a top earner. The answer to the question, if you asked how long until you would a line holder, would probably be in excess of 10 years. Because until you are a line holder you will probably only achieve 76 hrs of pay a month. That’s reserve guarantee of 73 hrs plus 3 hrs for 5 unused short calls. FOs on other fleets can and do earn more than 76hrs x (wide body pay).

When I was on the 756 Domestic in SFO, I did the math and 73 hrs. of wide body pay was equivalent to roughly 87.5 hours of pay and 76 hrs. was roughly equivalent to about 92 hours of wide body pay.

I'm considering becoming a Nobel Prize winner. Could you tell me if they pay you the prize money in cash or is it just a check?

I’m considering banging Miss America.

If that doesn’t work out there’s always Miss Kazakhstan. You should always have a plan B.
