Default 30 in 168 per the contract

I was told by pilots on multiple occasions that we have a provision in our contract that says we need 30 hours free from duty in our domicile even though 117 says it could be on a layover. They rolled me into 9 days straight today and I’m coming up short trying to find this provision in the contract. Does it even exist?

This question can lead to a discussion on the internet, but since this is apparently happening in real-time and you presumably want a correct answer, contact the union.

Here is the provision you are referring to.

5-E-3-h A Pilot assigned to a Basic Trip shall have a scheduled Off-Duty Period of at least twenty-four (24) consecutive hours at his Base at least once in the 168-hour period that begins when the Pilot’s last Off-Duty Period of at least twenty-four (24) consecutive hours ended.

The simple way to look at it, this is a scheduling/pbs limitation that doesn’t apply in the actual operation or to schedule building for Global fleets.

Once in the actual operation, FAR117 or 5-F limits apply ( whichever is more restrictive).

In this scenario, so long as 30/168 requirement is satisfied, you are legal. This is a fairly common practice in Global RSV assignments. So long as the 30 hours free from duty is known prospectively, it can happen anywhere.

Anytime you have legality questions in the actual operation, PDR.alpa.org to the Hotline.

Thanks for the info. Just when I thought reserve couldn’t get any worse. So as long as I keep getting trips with 30 hour layovers is there any limit on how many days straight I can work?

By the FARS, no real limit assuming all other restrictions/limitations are satisfied. However, at some point RSV min day off provisions in 5-E and 5-F are going to provide relief as well as normal scheduling buffers.

Bottom line, RDOs and FDOs can be rolled for the assignment of a trip ( assuming all else is legal) if there are no RSVs assignable without a day off disruption then CM first looks at min day off disruption BEFORE FIFO/SILO in that category. That’s why a great bid tactic is to group your non-HDOs in 3 day blocks.

Won’t go any deeper.

Also remember that if you’re on a Global Fleet, they can only roll you into an RDO if it is a Global Trip. They cannot roll you into an RDO for a Basic Trip (Domestic). The FDO they can roll for any trip. However, if you have an FDO followed by RDOs, they can only roll you into your FDO for basic trip and cannot touch the RDOs.
