Airlines are so fickle about who they interview .. I had a Navy Bud that had every box checked; liked by all, all time record high composite score in training command, Top Gun instructor, multiple letters of recommendation, and yet he could not get an interview at United. Head scratcher. He got on with Southwest in '98 and has enjoyed a better career than most of us at United.
My point is that, with the expected pilot shortage you'll get on with a major, but apply to all the "better" places to work and take the first good offer. You'll be fine.

My 2 €’s.
Go to every public event - job fair - where United has hiring reps. There are plenty throughout the year. You need to get face time. It does not matter what it is or where it is, you have to go to every one.
Find a United bud to get you into a chief pilot meet and greet.
You probably have an ATP, Master’s so those squares are filled.
I would get up to date on CRM and how to function in a crew cockpit. Plenty of good books, articles. That will help you in the interview. (For any carrier)
I would get intimately familiar with Jepp charts in general. Get a hold of a bunch of 10-7 pages for United bases (DEN, SFO, EWR, etc) again this will help in the interview. You need to be able be able to speak the language.
You have got to treat trying to get hired and the interview like a job, a full time job.
I am biased. AA is a sheitstorm which isn’t going to clear up for years. DAL is a good operation but you have to be a Delta pilot, which is a big negative. UAL for the first time since I was hired in ‘94 actually seems to have management who want to run an airline. We have the best union leadership in years. We’re hiring like crazy (8 classes of 36 in the next 3-4 months) and have a great selection of bases across the country. (Somewhat hard to get into ORD but one can get there after a while)
Once again, treat this process as a FULL TIME job.
I like fighter guys, I think everybody should own one...

There's a big difference between snobbery and hesitation. Not every mil guy is a retired fart with a $45K/yr check-of-the-month coming in to supplement that first year regional pay. My first month's pay at my regional didn't even cover my mortgage. Fortunately I had a reserve job and a five figure savings account. Not every dude is in that same situation and I totally understand some anxiety when a legacy job doesn't pan out right off the bat.
