Just know that the star on the flag represents the Texas spirit. Learned that at a tour of the Capitol in Sacramento.

Completely agree with your points.

Only looking at income tax way undercuts the cost of living comparisons of living in CA. Gas prices, energy costs, the 2% “pay the healthcare of our workers” tax, sales tax, melo ruse tax...need I go on?

That being said, the weather is great, and we make enough to fork out what it costs to live there if that’s what you like. Personally, I escaped 20 years ago and will never fly the bear.

Anywhere along the PA/NJ border (on the PA side), from Bucks County in the South, to the Poconos (East Stroudsburg) in the North, is about 1 hour drive from EWR. I'm up in Poconos and have about 1 hour drive to EWR and 1:20 to LGA. Housing is cheap, state taxes are very low, and people tend to just leave you alone in PA.

Other than that, the opportunities to make extra money because of the high number of commuters here makes up for what Governor Steal-Your-Girl takes from me.

Depends on how much you're making I guess .. state income tax alone decreased by $2000 / month when I left California for Pennsylvania 5 years ago. Add in housing, gas, cost of electricity, food, registration fees, water fees, and it's AT LEAST $3000 / month less for me to live in PA. That's $36,000 / year. Over a twenty year period, that's an extra million in your retirement account.

California used to be a great place to live; I was born and raised there, and spent 40+ years there. They've lost my business.

I am not at UNITED, it is just #1 on my list when my current job ends (military retiree in about 18 months).
Curious about commuting from within California. Specifically, we live in San Diego, but would be looking at LAX or SFO for domicile. I would think those are pretty decent commutes, given the number of flights and short duration of those flights.

I am way ahead of myself on this, but off all the things with civilian flying, the commuting piece is one of the most foreign to my way of life. Wife is from Milwaukee, and we are Packers season ticket holders, so she is fine with moving to the midwest...but I would love to not scoop snow on my off-time!

Thanks for listening!

Google search flights between SAN and LAX/SFO... give you a good idea on flight availability... if it’s all regional flying I’d be a bit worried.

The folks I know in San Diego area drive to LAX and SNA. WAY more flexible.

I'm in a similar situation (125 miles from domicile). I tried one time to commute: bad idea.

I don't commute-SFO, but I fly with a lot of San Diego commuters. Many times they can be home before I get to the Bay Bridge in SF. Decent commute, lots of options.

SFO is more junior than LA, and SFO has more flying. Career will progress faster in SFO, with more fleets and better variety.

If you can move to north SD county, the drive to LA will be "tolerable" (a relative term). On the 737 the SNA trips don't seem to go very senior on the FO side so that could be helpful once you have a year or two under your belt. Best of luck.

Southern Washington state is really nice, but the commute as a new hire will put gray hair on your head. There are quite a few SFO commuters up here and they're all senior. I've got twenty years here and I sometimes miss out on the 737 jumpseat.

The difficulty is offset by you having more control over your schedule faster because of the movement in SFO.

PM me if you'd like details about Camas/Vancuover/Washougal.

IAD is worth a very close look too, with schools being the challenge.
