Know when you must answer the phone, but especially when not to. The UPA is very detailed and thought through on this. It’s very specific and not always intuitive, but you’ll extend your personal shelf life a lot by knowing when you can’t be bothered.

With the slow down, what are the chances one could sit LSR everyday?

Not everyday, but there will be a lot less SC assignments (relative to reserves available) than there have been in the past.

Obviously it’s very category dependent, as some are much more over staffed than others. Currently the most overstaffed seat in the system is SFO 777 FO. In the next few days, Crew Companion shows 47, 47, 50, 55, and 62 reserves available each day. They’re only going to tag a relatively small percentage of those pilots with a SC, I’d say 10-20%.

Normally, you’re either flying, on field standby or short call. If you’re on long call, they’ll invent something for you to do unless there’s a bunch of open flying on the horizon. An example would be not building a short call for a Friday reserve when they have six open trips on Saturday. If they have nothing open, they’ll give you something.

Here’s the gouge if you’re new to reserve. That will get you started. If you have more specific questions, PDR or try the other forum. There are several experts over there who are more valuable than platinum.

April is going to be worse for all of us pilots that are SFO 777 FOs. On PBS it shows that there are going to be 211 total reserves. The G line is currently standing at 257 in category. There’s going to be a lot of pilots on SC!!!

There’s a decent chance LSR frequency won’t change. As long as they have one or two on LSR, they may feel free to put everyone else, whether one or twenty, on SC/FS since the penalty for doing so is not significant to them. From their POV there’s no downside to have pilots sitting at the airport all day, and all upside. I think the swing shift often looks at all those additional unused pilots on LSR and thinks why not make the scheduler’s life easier.

Not after removing 140 SRLs.
