They didn't say cut payroll by 60%, they said cut payroll to match a 60% schedule reduction.

Also, I noticed that Todd Insler's signature wasn't on the letter...

"To be specific, if Congress doesn’t act on sufficient government support by the end of March, our company will begin to take the necessary steps to reduce our payroll in line with the 60% schedule reduction we announced for April."

I saw it somewhere that federal government will treat different companies differently on bailouts depending on how their finances were run. The feds view stock buy-backs negatively when considering government assistance.

So nearly 10 years of record profits and airlines cannot last 2-3 months without slashing jobs in a downturn (downturn brought on by a singular event that may disappear as quickly as it appeared)
