I would be surprised if there are 10000 pilots on the list by Christmas.

You could easily be right, but I sure hope that you’re wrong. Reducing the list by 3,500 plus another 1,000 due to two years of attrition would reduce the current list by 1/3. Let’s just hope that we can come up with an attractive early out deal so that as many people as possible leave because they want to, not because they have to.

As the reality settles in, I think youre accurate. Until people arent terrified to get on an airplane, the whole game is forever changed. We wont know what reality is for atleast another 2 months.

I really hope I am wrong too.

We are really lucky to get a reprieve till October. A lot of people I know are already getting laid off (not aviation). I don't think travel will be people/corporations priority anytime soon.

Totally agree with your last points.

Best of luck to everyone.

I think it represents the fact that a lot of pilots on the list today have not been through the flip side of the coin of record growth.
First time looking down the barrel is an eye opener and would gut the contract for a “chance” that pilots won’t be furloughed. I think we both know how that ends......
It will be OUR job to relay our past experience to make sure it doesn’t happen again 👊🏻

You completely misunderstood what I’m saying. Nobody is talking about giving up all sort of concessions or gutting the contract. With the bail out money, if we decided to all do reduced lines to weather the storm for a year it will all work out to everyone benefit. If we furlough everyone will be affected, from Captains losing their seats to guys going back to our wonderful reserve system. But if you belong in the group of I got mine and don’t care about others, then it’s a completely different conversation. We have to think of a solution for the whole group.

Exactly, if BK taught this group nothing else, it’s don’t tie your own blindfold and place you head on the chopping block.

I have no idea how long you’ve been here, but the reason UAL pilots are rabid about the union pin is that a daily affirmation about unity, and being in it together. It’s times like this that test the mantra, but trust the processes.

Fortunately legacy U union has a lot of experience of what not to do.

True dat, I think current leadership was forged from those missteps. We’ll see.

Seriously? Any guesses on where our new hires came from? Most lived a decade of career stagnation from pre-2008 until the last few years.

I’ll give you that most haven’t seen it at UAL, but to suggest they don’t know the ramifications of an industry downturn is disingenuous. There’s a lot of experience in the bottom third of the list that knows the ramifications of givebacks. Unfortunately, just not from the perspective of mainline.
