Default Special Issuance Medical - AFIB

I just submitted the required documents to AMAS for the SI. FWIW its a hell of a cardiac workup! I had intermittent AFIB that was self correcting (no cardioversion req.) on the 30 day event monitor. Started meds and within 5 days it went from ~20% to zero, so I don't anticipate a problem with the SI. In looking through the requirements for later Class I approval it appears that my AME can reissue if I meet certain criteria.

Now here's my question. Do I really have to do a 24 Hour Holter monitor within 90 days of each physical?? That would be 2 per year!

Hoping someone in APC land has walked this path!

PS I think this is the first new thread in 6 or 7 years lol.

I am retired so no longer getting 1st Class, but I do keep a 2nd Class and I have to do a Holter before each physical. I had an ablation to repair my condition and have successfully been off any meds since. Doesn't make any difference to the FAA and I'm still doing Holter tests.

Thanks. The doctor said that I'm a good candidate for ablation, but for now the meds are working great. I'm going to research the best place/doctors to have the ablation done in the next 2 years. It looks like probably at total of 6 months off - including the procedure, 90 day wait, required tests, then have the SI processed. Gotta do something like that at the right time :-).

Thanks for the info!

If you are young enough and wait long enough without recurrence I believe you only have to do it for five years:

That's interesting. I need to ask Dr Parker about this so I have a full understanding of my options. I'm 53 so that would definitely be a player.

Since it seems this is all new for you I found a book called "Beat Your A-Fib very useful. It's available on Amazon and a little pricy but I think worth it.

I had afib in 2011-2012 and long story short is meds didn't help, cardioversion worked for about 9 months and then finally had an ablation in 2012 and have been in sinus rhythm since. My cardiologist keeps me on a low dose anti arrythmia dosage and for my Special Issuance the FAA requires a 24 hour Holter monitor once a year along with the FAA doc's EKG. Waiting for the FAA to get and review packet can take some time so be patient!!!
