What are you suggesting as an alternative? Throw my life savings into crypto or gold? Can't just leave all your money in cash or spend it on ammo like some of you nut jobs do.

The people who are considering this 401(k) loan to pay for bills are losing out on the tax-deferred growth. But if you think the world and monetary system is collapsing, then I think your retirement savings should be the least of your concerns.

Investing in tangible assets vs. fake paper money with no real value that’s built by gamblers and crooks definitely makes you a nut job. I think you have a solid opinion there.

You didn't answer the question. Have fun waiting for the day you'll actually get to exercise that ammo stockpile of yours. Plenty of people retire comfortably investing in what you consider "fake paper money" (which I don't even think you know what that means).

This is an emergency option for people who need money now. If you don't need it, good for you. Others may not be so fortunate and to them this may seem a reasonable option.

You get to spend your money and the rest of us get to spend ours. Why the heartburn? You're not going to pay the tax, I am. What if I have terminal cancer and want to go out in style? Makes sense, does it not?

Sounds like you are taking the Fox commercials too serious..."Invest in Gold!!"

So you must have quite the stash of beaver pelt and wampum under your mattress

It has so far. So there's a pretty good chance it will be here long after you and I are gone. And when it comes to planning your life, you go with the odds. Doesn't mean you can't contingency plan what might happen if our economic system collapses, but putting as much pre-tax money into a diversified portfolio, over time, is the single most powerful way to generate wealth.

To suggest otherwise is stupid.

.
No sh1t. I was at a dudes house a few weeks ago and he had a massive safe room with 50K rounds of ammo, 40 guns of various sizes, and 20 or so hand grenades. He also had stashes of supplies buried all around the country, just in case. A 787 CA.

Those 787 CA’s are notorious for being under armed and not having enough ammo. Did you sit him down and talk to him about having enough ammo and an adequate number of guns?

Maybe he’ll slip up with the wrong bag, get caught accidentally taking some of his arsenal through KCM, and be forcibly retired early. One can only hope.
