Multi-Airport Base

Folks if you don't mind an outsider asking....How does the company treat someone based in NYC when they can be assigned duty at different airports. Is there recognition of the travel expense/time or are you on your own to get there?
Thanks.
Retired guy just a-wondering

You are responsible for any trip departing any co-terminal bases. For example, SFO also covers SJC, and OAK. You do get crosstown pay for departing out of the satellite airport.

JFK, EWR, LGA.
Used to be ORD, Midway--but we don't fly out of Midway anymore.
LAX, BUR, SNA. I'm not sure if ONT is still covered.

Great if you live in base, plays havoc if you commute. Bidding gets important for the satellite bases and equipment types.

One airport is designated as Le Grande Fromage. That's where you can drop your uniform off for cleaning and pressing, as well as your shoes when they need shining. There's a designated changing room with lockers and showers, a sauna, and a small but well equipped gym. Towels, toiletries and the like are provided throughout and a masseuse is avail most days, but you're advised to schedule ahead of time. ESPECIALLY if you want Tina or her twin sister and desire a little something extra to "get your mind right". ;).

While it's true that you can sometimes score a rub when another guy misconnects or calls in sick, I don't advise it. It's very easy when Ramone is doing the rubs, but damn near impossible on Tina days. She and her smoking hot sister are part timers and their schedules fill up right after the bid results are out. While I have been told that Ramone is a great guy, really, and thorough. He's not my cup of Joe.

The designated or 'Home-Drome" will have free Starbucks and NYTs. At the others, you're on your own. The Chief Pilots office staff will proovide you with the card. No more than 6 dollars per drink, however, so watch those Venti Caramel Macchiatos. You'll just have to pay the difference.

Since the iPads showed up, the free Jepp revision service has been discontinued by the interns. It has been replace with "Lot Service". They will run out to the employee lot on hot/cold days to fire up your AC/Heat as necessary. You simply need to sign up once on your trip. Use the iPad CONCUR app and drop off your keys before you leave. Of course, tipping is recommended. After all, they work for FREE and UAL is only too happy to take advantage of THAT!

At those domiciles with inclement weather (imagine that!) - They are no longer available to shovel the snow out from around your car. Jeff Smisek killed that. He killed a lot of things actually.

You get cross town pay if they schedule you to fly out of one of the other airports. And, you are allowed a little more wiggle room on report time as a reserve maggot when called out for a trip. And if they limo you for a trip, you can ask for the limo on either end. At least for now anyway. Things in the contract that are seldom used are quickly discarded when push comes to shove. And as we all know, Reserve is a choice.

Valet Parking and curbside dropoff for your golf clubs, guitar, surfboard, scuba gear, kite board etc? All gone. Thanks Glen.

Helpful office folks at the Home Drome to help you with miscellaneous questions and stuff? All gone. Thanks, Glen. But there are a lot of really helpful pilots in the CPO for anything else that might come up. As well as -

Sani wipes?

Granola Bars?

Face masks?

Deeeeluxe rubber bands?

Ear dicks?

Tie thingy's?

You betcha!

The printers, though technically functional are just props and inert given that at any one time, 85 percent of them are INOP. Besides, paper costs money, and ink even more.

Ahhhhhhhh.....EWR shows at 0500 from Kew Gardens. "CAR SERVCE". BWI shows at 0500 from ANYWHERE. No idea about the west coast, but I assume they have their own special routines.

Brilliant. Just the right amount of imagination and satire to make the post not just useful but entertaining. Out of the cockpit now for a few years and getting a bit rusty but I think we could have had some memorable layovers. Thanks.
Shiny side up! BA27

How's the NYC-area trip distribution among the narrowbody and widebody fleets? And are things expected to change much in the future with the return to JFK?
