When I get some seniority, it will then be ok to be an arrogant ass only worried about myself?

You choose to be that also.

I mean having a little decent human kindness and letting other commuters know — in advance — that you’ll be first on the jumpseat list (as you should be; deserved) so they can plan accordingly.

I don’t commute and am already an arrogant ass, so seniority just postpones my furlough letters a few months.

Great point, it’s a terrible system. Delta and FDX and I’m sure others have the ability to book the jump seat in advance. Why don’t we again?

A junior UAL lineholder could be bumped on UAL metal just hours before takeoff by a senior pilot who picked up a senior manning trip to make some extra $$ and rushed to the airport. How is that reasonable to penalize the guy flying his line so the guy making an extra 3-5K doesn’t have to buy an airline ticket?

It’s not penalizing anyone. It’s just 2 people exercising their seniority. It’s seniority that enables one pilot to outbid others for premium pay, and it’s the same system that determines the pecking order for pass travel, jumpseat, BES awards......... I commute, and I understand the risk associated with making the decisions to live out of base.

I dunno, I've done MCO and FLL to EWR probably 100 times for a certain yellow ULCC and have only had a jumpseater in the jumpseat a hand full of times. I think we do RSW and TPA now also. Move to wherever you want and look at other options other than UAL and we'll get you to and from work. Cheers!

I commute out of South Fl almost exclusively on B6 and NK, I learned early on not to even look at our own loads, got bumped by a famous scab out of FLL on my first month at UAL and never again.
He listed last minute obviously...

I’m glad you like the system, commuters are much happier elsewhere I’ve learned. I don’t commute and the way we handle commuters is a big reason why.

I do realize it sucks, and we could be better.

I've seen it done minutes before departure. My favorite though was when a scab tried to bump another UAL guy off the jump seat in RNO, 5 min before departure, and I told the scab to take the next flight, he was too late and would have caused a delay. He was not happy, oh well....

You don’t need to rationalize why deny a scab. You deny a scab because they are a scab.

Hoss, of course, the fact that he was a scab made it a little fun.
