New Vacancy Bid 21-10V
#22
Depending on where you're coming from it can actually be a good option. I flew both the bus & the guppy in my first year. Bus was way more comfortable to fly, but the trips felt like the same domestic 4 days with DSM layovers I had been doing for the preceding decade at the regionals. When I switched to the guppy, I was in the Caribbean & Latin America all the time. It's the step-child of the fleet for sure, but I was so ready for a change that I actually enjoyed it much more.

United has been pretty obvious by its actions the 73 is the NB workhorse of the future. Not the greatest office but I’d rather have a better flight schedule and see movement in my seat for seniority, over the cushy power seat. 756 may be appealing too, but if are you expecting to commute? Don’t forget 756 will have to cover JFK and EWR now. So being senior enough to avoid what you don’t want may be worth a little time in the Guppy before bidding over to the Bus or 756. Glad your excited and hope you find the seat you’re looking for at indoc. Welcome!!!

There are gotchas in every base and seat. The 73 is a great place to start before you get to understand the downfalls of each. An example is bidding 756 sfo without realizing you are now doing nothing but ewr, jfk, and bos unless someone senior calls out for a Hawaii. If you have anyone here to talk about equipment with it might be eye opening. Training on the 73 is a well worn path for a newhire, gives you plenty of takeoffs and landings to learn how the airline runs, and the training department is used to new people and are welcoming. You might want something different but getting the 73 out of the gate might be a blessing in disguise. A very uncomfortable blessing.

I'll add to this, I've been on the property 6 years now and earlier this year got displaced to the 737, first time in 30 years of flying I ever got to actually fly one.. I was pleasantly surprised after hearing horror stories about it. Sure its got some down sides but perhaps thousands of hours in Turboprops have made me realize what uncomfortable is. Take what you get and enjoy the progression!

The guppy is a cramped, underperforming, underpowered, under winged, over stretched, ridiculously fast approach speed, noisy POS, that should have been retired decades ago. It’s without a doubt the worst airframe we have at UAL.
And it’s a POS that pays the bills.

It’s all of those things. It’s also the largest NB fleet, it’s growing, and it provides more scheduling options and flexibility. The bus fleet is aging, pretty stagnant, other than a distant 321 order, not much of a chance of changing that. The 756 is approaching the end of it’s service as well. As much as many would have preferred that the company picked the NEO, the dream guppy is the NB future at United.
