Default 777 PW Return to Flying

Any word on the fixes for the PW 777? I’m tempted to bid it, since I’d be a mid-range line holder, but not if I’ll be on reserve.

I think a lot of people are in this position, and it’s probably at least in part why those seats are going so junior. Roll the dice & bid now, or wait until your position relative to the G-line is more secure. Not that helpful, I know, but I think that’s just the reality of where things are with 777 bids presently.

Latest word is half the fleet back by year’s end and the rest by next summer. That’s worth what you paid for it.

The word from the 787/777 Newsletter says this ^

. . . , but I asked Carlson in an email and the answer was the bid out now is designed to prepare the 777 ranks for summer '22 flying which, although he didn't say so, I assume means 777 flying including the return of the PWs. Certainly, the MIN-MAX sheet would indicate a fleet much larger than what we have today. If you're thinking there might be more big 777 bids later when the PWs return, I don't think that's how it works. If that's not what you're thinking then my apologies.

My oft spoken pilot 2 cents: bid what you want; don't base a bid on a guess of the future.

Have you seen the reserve usage in SFO 777? Not a bad gig they got going over there. Even as a commuter you’d maybe be on the hook for 2-3 short calls a month.

At last weeks townhall, it was announced that all PW 777's will return to flying by summer of 2022 at the latest...this includes all the 777 "A" models.

Until they decide to park 1/3 o 1/2 of them… Crystal Ball is cloudy… until international demand/restrictions change I’d take these town halls with a grain of salt.

777 FO here. Haven’t flown since early May. I think I picked up 1 or 2 SC a month to put me at the bottom of the list. Of course, I live 45 minutes from the airport. Not a bad gig.

I’ve also heard that there are 3 different PW issues:
1. Uncontained fire
2. Cowlings coming apart
3. Fan blade… lately lots of focus on this, and yes it appears that the fan blades will all be fixed by next summer.

However, the larger issue that I’ve heard is that because of 1-2-3, the PW 777’s ETOPS future is in jeopardy. So even though there’s a timeline to fix all the fan blades, I think there’s still some uncertainty regarding the types of trips the jets will actually fly.

According to the EWR CPO, the cowling fix has already been agreed to between UA Engineering and the FAA.
