Zero time/part time

Is this an option at United? Able to bid part time or zero time lines?

Currently, empty lines are an option (partial lines no) .. but who knows going forward. Some signs point to that the company will keep the zero line options going over the winter but they are never guaranteed.

You can bid a line at the lower end of the credit range for the month, then drop what ever trip(s) to get you down to a part time, or zero time line.

One caution for new hire pilots employing this strategy (since recently hired new hires will be line holders very quickly). In order for you to complete your probationary period at UAL, you must have 12 months on property and at least 165 days of service to the company. Most pilots have no trouble meeting this in the first 12 months on property; however, if you only spend a couple of months on reserve and then start dropping trips each month, one might find themselves on probation for longer than the normal 12 months until the 165 day requirement is met. Not a huge deal to some, but it would be to me.

Empty Lines are hit and miss… It really depends on seniority. If you’re junior on your current BES (Base - Equipment - Seat) it’s better to take an SRL (50hour pay line - no flying option). As you get a little more senior in seat, Empty Lines can be a blessing, especially if you commute. Zero guaranteed pay for the month….but if you can risk it, you are are considered a “line holder” So you are eligible to pick up trips at ANY base by 1300 LOCAL BASE TIME. So you have to be proactive, but it can give you an opportunity to get trips you might not normally get as a reserve or very junior holder.

Good Luck!
