Talking to CPO

Domestic? First contact is usually at the plane. If my commute in (I drive to JFK from NJ) goes fast and Im stopping for coffee/bagels/pizza I will text the other pilot and ask what they want.

most pilots don't want to spend an unneeded and extra twenty minutes walking to and fro, so why not meet at the jet? haven't seen a problem with it

dunno why choosing to exercise in the gym instead of across the airport is mind-blowing but seems like just being efficient to me

Thanks for the superflous memo dude. But if you read what I said closely, you might have clued in on that I had to log onto those sources the hard way and then click my way to what I wanted (this was well before I could log into CCS alone with facial recognition). With EZ CCS I'm on the mobile device trade board with two taps in a few seconds. Trust me, every second counts. As I tell New Hires, when gunning for unanticipated PPU or similar opportunities inside the Real Time window the fastest beats the seniorist. For a New Hire, snagging even a single one day PPU trip would pay for a careers worth of EZCCS. And it's nice to list for commute flights while walking to the gate too.

Sure...if you have your password saved on your phone you can get into Crew Companion with two taps without EZCCS. Some people need all the help they can get apparently, glad someone figured it out for you lol

That someone was obviously me, because I didn't have the good fortune to have someone like you looking out for me with unsolicited snarky comments. I could rehash the many other useful features of EZCCS, but I figured the potential $$$ to be made would be sufficiently motivational to Duckdude. I enjoy helping New Hires avoid my mistakes, and not having EZCCS before leaving Indoc was a notable one.

Whatever dude. You do you. I'm not dicking around guessing every trip if a CA is going to contact me or meet in the FPA or at the plane. Maybe you missed the part where I added "unless I hear back from you". Yeah, CA is always free to tell me to meet in the FPA. About 90% specifically commented that they appreciated the contact.

And if I don't hear from him and I go to the FPA and he doesn't..? Efff that. Waist your own time if you want to, not mine. A few times twidling my thumbs in the FPA as a newb to UA was enough shenanigans. Not gonna guess if the next guy is the 1/100 that actually goes to the FPA - the same that don't put any contact info in CCS.

I did see that, and that is in fact the part I take issue with.. nothing wrong with texting the captain and asking where to meet. But if no response, you are obligated by the FOM to go to the FPA.. curious as to what else in the FOM you disregard? I think it’s a stupid thing to have in the FOM but nonetheless it’s in there. If you don’t like it, upgrade and text all your FOs you’ll meet at the plane. BTW I’m a meet at the plane kind of guy and text my FOs as such. But your text would be a red flag from the part of a Captain.

So, I’m a meet at the airplane mentality and always text my FO’s. But, lacking the communication from the Captain you let me know how your situation works out. I suspect you don’t show the bravado you display on the interwebz.

I understand both of you're opinions, and can also see how it comes across on here. That post is what I'm thinking in my head about this issue. I can absolutely see how it comes across as me being an ahole and bravado. And you're right, I wouldn't have a leg to stand on in a discussion about violating the FOM. Look, I'm pretty fastidious about being by the book, and being a bit more "traditional", I probably fall on the side of being overly deferential in the cockpit. But this one is what it is. As mentioned numerous times, it was extremely rare for anyone to meet in the FPA in my base. I started doing that 100%. It wasn't long at all until it just became clear that no one does it. I decided to take the initiative to clear the confusion and wasting of time that this caused.

I can see how me telling instead of asking comes across - that's a very fair point. Just my opinion, but if an FO sent me that text, my mind wouldn't even trend toward him/her usurping my authority, but that's just me. As evidenced by numerous posts how very few do follow the FOM in this regard, I see it as clearing some potential confusion. Almost every CA replied back in a very friendly manner thanking me for making contact and stating that the plane is fine - so I see that as most interpreting that as me asking/confirming, not directing. Obviously you guys don't and you are the ones that I'd have to answer to. I'm willing to answer to the very few - never had to - vs go through the awkward routine every time.

As far as the whole what else in the FOM are you willing to disregard? I also see that point as fair, and can't really defend it, but that could probably be said every flight on almost every pilot over something trivial - colored socks anyone...

Taking your comments into consideration, doing it again, I would propably change my verbiage and go to the FPA if no reply. Points taken.

I’m going to start scolding the FOs that I see in the terminals without hats.

If you really want to have fun, you should scold all of the NB captains who insist on meeting in the FPA for not having hats. As a super senior FO I had a captain complain to me about people assuming that they'd just meet at the plane. He was correct in that the FOM said that the FPA was the default location and that professional pilots don't pick and choose what parts of the FOM that we follow. He didn't have an answer when I asked him where his hat was.😂😂
