Used 777-300ER

Rumor has it United is close to securing 13 used 777-300ER due to extended 787 delivery delays.

Will these hit the line before or after the delivery of the rumored A330 order that was supposed to be announced at the Farnborough Airshow?

Is that why we are displacing from the 787. Company knows most will bid to the 777 anyways.

I think the company regrets not buying more new ones when it had the chance. So this rumor actually makes some sense, as our oldest A models are starting to turn 30 and the 787 cannot touch the 777-300ER for cargo capacity. Looks like we have a dozen A models all built before 1997, and we're going to need some feedstock for more Cattle cars too. Conversion costs would be very high though, perhaps BA would throw in some compensation for the delays. Time will tell.

If BA has to give us anymore for delays, they’re gonna need to start giving us free airplanes… that they still won’t be able to deliver.

We actually have 13 A models built in 95 or 96, 6 more built in 2000 for a total of 19 A models. All of those are in the Hawaii/Domestic configuration.

We also have 4 of the B models (2001 builds) in the Hawaii/Domestic configuration. Those are some of the "newest" B models and were converted to that config when they were doing the Polaris reconfiguration 6-8 years ago. They decided to add to the Hawaii config rather than transition them to Polaris.

If the rumor is true, I would guess they would us the 300s in a Polaris config and maybe transition more of the B's to the Hawaii config as they transition the A's out of the system. The A's have the disadvantage of both being older than most of the B's and having many more cycles.

The As aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. A new block point has been approved and these aircraft will have domestic CPDLC capability (bizarre that you can go to Hawaii CPDLC but not login to KUSA for enroute upon return). Not saying things can’t change but I’d expect more Bs to supplement the current As in domestic operation (albeit without the need to watch the landing weight as closely). Love flying the As domestically.
