Training Questions
Thought I’d start a thread on training…
thinking about going to upgrade on the 737, I’ve been on it before at United but not currently on it. Guessing I have to do all the CBTs again? 🤣. As far as I know we get to bid on long term training schedules now, is that correct? When does that typically happen? |

I have a class date for March - Would appreciate some tips for initial new hire training for myself. Thanks in advance

just do what they tell you. Literally, just do what they tell you. Pretty much that simple. It’s not rocket surgery. |

Read the material and know the callouts and flows. Don't overthink it. They are not out to get you, but you do have to come in to the different events prepared.

As far as I know we get to bid on long term training schedules now, is that correct? When does that typically happen? 1. A qual course plus OE is 1 month at FTC. OE depending on time line is 2-3 weeks. Training scheduling owns you regardless of what bids you hold on the line until OE complete. Do not plan personal things on your days off. Your schedule will change. Training scheduling should notify you. Look at your schedule each day to ensure no changes. 2. Yes you bid on your schedule. Unfortunately training scheduling/company has last say for a myriad of reasons to changes to your schedule. They are trying to honor or be as close to days requested but remember, once I training things do change due to sick pilots/instructors/sick simulators or retrains and or failures for you and your partner. 3. Crews can be unpaired. Sucks but legal.. except for check ride in narrow bodies. 4. If you are solo with seat support, get a clear expectation of the seat support guidelines. A standard seat support means many things to different people. Demand the best from them and load them up. Anything less is BS 5. After each event and debriefed, ask to see the comments written in FOX. checking events require "your signature." Do not accept an I/E who says I will sign. Do not accept an I/E WHO does not offer or show your comments. What is debriefed should be close to exact on comments. 6. Understand what short cycles are and retrains. 7. Section 9 governs schedules and rules for you while in training. Learn it. 8.you own your training. Not the I/E. if your not happy get it fixed. You are the customer. 9. Only LOE's have restrictions on what periods can be scheduled, periods 2,3,4. QPV's QMV's and CQMV,s can be scheduled for period a thru 5 10. If you have a seat support they are required to be there for the brief. If not ask why. FTC policy. No excuses. .. enjoy. I'll write more if I think of some things |
Pro tip. If you drive to training, don't park your car at the Double Tree. 😁

Like someone mentioned just do what the instructors in BI tell you and don’t get too far ahead of yourself. I did the cbts ass on as soon as they were available which gave me more flexibility later on. I also recommend going to the paper tiger and doing call outs and flows before each lesson. My sim partner and I did this all the way to the checkride even if we knew them down cold, it’s just great prep for the lesson and gives you more time to work on stuff in the sim. I signed up for Grubhub just to change food options.

Simple; study the flows, maneuvers, and callouts… and when you have those cold memorized then start understanding what happens during the flows when you press a button or turn a switch… you’ll understand the systems a bit better. Also start practice on the FMC online trainers if your fleet has it once you grasp the flows, maneuvers, and callouts. you’ll be way ahead of the pack if you do these items.

A minor addition but read the syllabus prior to each lesson and view the PowerPoint slides in the iPad. Instructors don’t have the time to teach the lesson to you as your first time hearing it. Good study questions in there as well.

I had one that was so bad because they hadn’t looked at anything. I cancelled the sim.. |

it’s more common than not that we will be doing cold wx or hot wx ops and someone shows up to the brief like “I didn’t know we were doing this today”
I definitely don't want to go back to the adversarial days of sim training, but there is a balance. |

You're currently at TK? That's really amazing to hear and BS quite honestly. We have a really good training dept IMO and so much information to look at. You know EXACTLY what you're getting into every period. It really is impressive and quite different than the days I remember of "look over x,y, and z for tomorrow" and that was about it.

yup , at TK and those were just an example. It happens with other things as well which is why I always go over what’s gonna happen on the next event what they should be reviewing before hand. If I can tell that they at least opened the book or looked at the slides then I will bend over backwards to get the info across to them. Show up completely unprepared and it’s a waste of our time together.
