Any DFW Commuters?

New hire on the guppy and I’ve got about 8 months in my lease left in DFW, after which, I plan on moving to domicile, but I’m not set on which one that will be.

For my probationary year, I’d like to set myself up for the most success and make the commute as easy as possible. I’ve heard that flights from DFW-IAH are brutally senior and it’ll end up being a drive almost every time.

Outside of driving to IAH, are there any recommendations for which base makes life easiest to commute from DFW?

End your lease early and move to base? You’ll lose a month of rent and not have to deal with commuting stress in your probationary year.

In an ideal world, I’d like to, but the lease agreement here requires 2 months notice and 2 months rent after the 2 months. So I’d pay for December, January, and February, then pay 2 months rent on top of that to break it.

TLDR; it’s a little pricey, but not out of question

Sublease if allowed. I’d avoid commuting to a place that is also an American hub. That being say you’d have priority over them on our metal, just reduces your options to use theirs imo

Just buy tickets.

also attempt to negotiate with the landlord. tell them “hey, I want out, please attempt to rent my unit - i will stay until you rent it” maybe they can work something out for much less $$

I was going to suggest this too. You can buy a ticket for DFW-IAH today for $143 on us. Might even be some cheaper options on other carriers, didn’t check.

Also worth noting, we have six direct DFW-IAH flights today, all on mainline, and all with 20+ open seats. Obviously no guarantee it’s always going to be that way, but maybe this commute isn’t always too terrible?

No personal knowledge, just going off that one data point… but trying to non-rev/JS it and then buying a ticket when needed doesn’t sound too crazy or expensive for less than a year.

Keep an eye on loads while you're in training. That's a flight with a lot of frequency and I've done it a few times recently and never had a jumpseater. A lot of people make a lot harder commutes work in their first year here so I don't know why you would have an issue.

SFO. Have flown with quite a few DFW WB commuters who choose it vice IAH. A couple of reasons for this - mostly flown by AA 321s with two jumpseats and most of the commuters are UAL guys. Because of the time change it’s easy to make a relatively early show time vs. the East Coast. And seniority in SFO is obviously excellent. Of course, one other reason that doesn’t apply here is that the WB flying out of SFO is so productive and IAH is so not that it makes the commute worthwhile. Worth trying out for a bit for future WB consideration before you move.
