UAL to choose between A350 & B-787

United Airlines will choose between the Airbus A350 and Boeing 787 and “contemplate” the A380 when it begins to renew its fleet after emerging from Chapter 11 in February next year.

The US major – which has been in bankruptcy protection for more than three years and was forced to park dozens of its older aircraft in the desert after 9/11 – will return a “stronger company” and make a “modest” net profit next year, says chairman and chief executive Glenn Tilton.

Note that the story was released 6 months ago on 06/12/05, a lot has changed since then at UAL. With respect to the 787, I don't think UAL could get any deliveries in numbers that would make a "fleet" prior to 2009 - they missed the boat there.

Might actually be an advantage as UAL has typically bought the "early models" that in some cases were not as good as the later versions. I.E., the 777-200A vs 777-200B model.

Good point, I'll add my name to the list that of those who don't think a new jet order from UAL is imminent. One thing we do know for sure, UAL won't be a launch customer for either jet!

Sorry, HSLD, but I have to correct you. Europeans do their dates in the DD/MM/YY format, so the above date is December 6th.

United missed the boat on the 787, that's for sure.

Airbus will wind up making a sweet offer for the A350, and UAL will join US Airways as the only A350 operators in the states around 2009.

Either one would be good; they would be extremely helpful to their bottom line.
