New Uniforms for the NEW UAL
CO and UA to create new uniforms for merged airline
CO and United Airlines (UA) have made a joint decision to move forward with a fresh uniform design for the new airline resulting from the anticipated merger. The new uniforms will be a highly visible part of the new UA brand for our collective customers and co-workers.
Prior to the merger announcement, UA had engaged world-renowned fashion designer Cynthia Rowley to develop a new uniform program. Following the announcement, UA paused the development of the new uniform until the merger integration teams could discuss and plan for a new uniform for the combined airline. The Marketing functional integration team, in collaboration with leaders of the various workgroups which wear uniforms, is leading the effort. A new uniform program typically includes both tailored apparel and “workwear” uniforms, and both types of garments will be included in the new uniform program for applicable work groups.
In early August, uniformed employee representatives from CO and UA will meet to provide their input on uniform design, function and wearability. Cynthia Rowley will also be at the meeting to consult and take input on tailored uniform design, applicable to work groups such as flight attendants and airport sales agents.
In a later step, Rowley will provide tailored uniform design concepts for review by uniformed employees and those involved in this aspect of merger integration planning. Producing new uniforms involves not only design and selection of multiple pieces of apparel and accessories, but also testing, manufacturing and distribution to tens of thousands of employees at the combined company. Because many elements in a complex process have yet to be decided, a definitive timeline for deploying new uniforms is not currently available.
About Cynthia Rowley: While studying design in college, Rowley sold her first collection of eight pieces to a number of New York’s most prominent stores. Since then, the Cynthia Rowley Collection has grown beyond women’s wear to include beauty, baby, bicycles, active-wear, home sewing patterns, tools, handbags, shoes, legwear and shapewear. The Collection is sold in better department, specialty and online stores, as well as in approximately 60 Cynthia Rowley shops around the world. The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) honored her with the prestigious Perry Ellis Award for Womenswear and recognized Cynthia again with a nomination for New Menswear Design Talent.

You know what they say about fashion: its so ugly that they have to reinvent it every six months.
That's what bothers me about a semi high profile fashion designer going to work on pilot uniforms. A) it way outside her primary focus, which is anything but conservative. And B) they will have a fashion timestamp of 2011 despite the uniform design having a 10 year service life.
My guess is they'll be dated within 2 years, and we'll be stuck with cooperate "parachute pants" for a decade.

As for fashion life, I think a pilot uniform is a bit hard to give a fashion shelf life. Black or Blue suit with stripes on it and wings. Keep it simple. I'm not big on the hat but if the company wants to pay me a high enough "hat donnage fee" I will oblige. Jeffy-poo is used to charging fees for everything now he can get used to paying them too.
