UAL furloughs and CAL hiring.
First of all, anyone have any idea of the 1400 furloughs that are planning on coming back?
Secondly, Fred Abbot (VP flights ops CAL side) had a SOC roadshow in the crewrooms.
He stated that CAL indeed was understaffed, however, due to the rules of the TA signed (UAL furloughs hired in sr. order at CAL) was a detriment in CAL hiring as these guys would be hired back at UAL in the next 12 to 24 months. You can see the ramifications of management and training cost... you all at UAL hear anything about possibly being recalled?

Until an SOC as far as I'm concerned I am a CAL pilot and a UAL pilot is a UAL pilot, best for all of us.

Talked with a friend of mine who went to one of these dog-and-pony shows in the IAH crewroom recently. Fred "We'll Help Make Your Commute Easier" Abbott stated that CAL would not be hiring any UAL furloughs this year and would make it through with the staffing we have according to what my friend reported him saying. Seems there is a "cost" issue involved of some sort. His report appears to mesh with what I have heard that he has said at other similar sessions.
Based on that I wonder if management ever had any intentions of honoring, I mean applying, that provision of the T&PA? I think I already know the answer.

Sort of implies that UCH management does not plan on having a JCBA for a long time. IF we had a TA tomorrow, the ISL clock would end in 6 months. SO the "hired back at United in 12-24 months" would not apply as we would ALL be United. And they actually said they wanted a JCBA by OCT 2010 last year at the MAD. What a bunch of phuking liars. Remember guys, single engine taxi and cut down the apu usage. Smisek says so. Throw on ch9 as well if your United. The customers just love it. I hope the CAL staffing is adequate for the summer. The Summer of 2000 was a fiasco for United when their staffing was inadequate.

Please, cal pilots lines are 90+ hrs. Understaffed? Highly doubt it. Its called utilization and many cal pilots dont mInd due to the $.
When they have massive cx's due to lack of staffing or sick calls maybe the comPany will listen but until then. Business as usual and if they cx a few flights so be it. No ual recalls anywhere before end of year. Tk spooling up is the biggest indicator.
While mgmnt knows the tpa agreement expires at the end of the year, they think they have leverage by wanting the union to extend it.
I highly doubt mgmnt has the balls to hire new hires at cal with ual furloughs still out. Too much backlash. Cal pilots arent under a restraining order either.

Once the 737-500's are parked the staffing "problem" is fixed. I'm guessing that CAL does not want to come right out and say this...yet.

I have been bringing up the issue of United furloughees going to CO for a while. Wendy hasn't responded to my e-mails on it. My guess is that there are a handful of United guys that live in a CO domicile that would stay at CO, but most would come back to UA at the first chance. The logistics of this would be a nightmare. CO would train the new hires, they stay for 6 months and then return to UA. They would then have to train the replacements and this cycle will get worse as hiring spools up for retirements next year.

So if mgmt is so worried about training costs, what about the training costs associated with 500+ retirements a year on both sides kicks off in less than 24 months? Are CAL and UAL reporting finances separately again or something? Oh, buy the way Mr. Abbott, try shifting 1% of block hours from CAL to UAL and this problem is solved. His whole logic is absolutely absurd, other than the fact that we are in negotiations and mgmt is hoping we give away something in exchange for some recalls. Lets not forget that the current state is ENTIRELY mgmts doing. They agreed to the transition agreement, I don't think we were exactly getting a steal in the process. KC

Every pilot of UniCal has access to Skynet which shows the org chart of UA flight operations with Abbott right at the top with the VP of Flight Ops for United reporting to him. There is no CAL or UAL at Abbott's level.
