Nuts,
After looking over the CAL reserve rules outlined above, they SUCK. Don't know how/where your rumor started, but I can see a HUGE rejection of CAl work (reserve) rules if that was presented to the UAL guys for vote. I'm quite sure it would go down in flames. So your rumor sounds completely logical - Of course management would have started there (CAL rules). And with enough negotiating and convincing, hopefully they see how futile that attempt would be. |
CAL reserve example...
A CAL reserve gets a 4 day trip worth 20 hours.
At the end of pairing, scheduling rolls his days off and assigns him a another 2 day trip worth 10 hours. At the end of the pairing, scheduling rolls your days off again. They assign you another 3 day trip worth 7 hours. It starts with a 2 hour flight to Cancun (International flight taking you to 32/7) where the reserve will get his downline 24 hour rest break (24/7) in Cancun the next day. After a nice Cancun layover where you can do laundry, your ready to go to finish the next 2 days and be rolled again unless you have immovable off days coming up. Welcome to CAL reserve |

Expect the activity to ramp up mid August through the end of the year...F&DT comes out on or about the 8th and 9th of August. |
I can't remember ever having to do laundry on any UAL trip, except one where I spilled SO much coffee on my shirt I couldn't hide it under my tie...

The reality is that CAL is getting a lot of planes delivered next year, 12 737s. Cross your fingers and there will be some 787s thrown in as well. This is why there is the need. These planes were on order prior to the merger. The sad thing is that some of our 777 orders were converted to 737s.

Snapshot Schedule
Any idea when the systems bid snapshots are scheduled to take place? I couldn't find anything on the bulletin board regarding this.

The reality could also be they're putting planes on the property where they're cheaper to fly. CAL is hiring, UAL is not. Which labor is cheaper? Follow the money.

The reality is this bid still does not have enough pilots to cover the flying for next summer.
1. More 737s to be delivered with increased flying projections for the entire 737 fleet for summer 2012. 2. 787s finally delivered so staffing needed just for those new airplanes. 3. Projected retirements on this bid: 9 (SLIGHTLY LOW!!!) We are in crisis mode right now with the bodies and flying we are currently doing. The 200 pilots would help for this years flying!!! Now we are going to add planes AND increased 737 flying next year? Do the math, people, we will be understaffed again for summer 2012. It doesn't take a genius to figure this out. This is the same thing that happened in our January system bid using data from the company's own statements: 1. The system bid last summer recalled all of our furloughed pilots BUT not all of them came back to the property. So we started off short right there since not all came back AND the company didn't take UAL pilots to fill those open slots. Therefore, adjustment needed in the January bid, right? 2. The company stated the number of retirements from the summer 2010 system bid was actually greater than expected. Thererore, adjustment needed in the January bid, right? 3. The company stated the projected block hours for summer 2011 was greater than the summer 2010 system bid had planned. Therefore, adjustment needed in the January bid, right? Three statements that would indicate the need for the January system bid to increase staffing for 2011. How many system vacancies were actually on the January 2011 system bid? Care to guess anyone???? ZERO Right there we all knew summer 2011 was going to be brutal and it has lived up to expectations. Negative FO coverage system wide on a rolling basis. Captain reserve coverage is only slightly better. I wouldn't expect 2012 to be any better unless we have some serious changes to our work rules. |
