Don't understand the post. Those positions for LOA?

I'm sorry. Does VFR stand for Voluntary Furlough? And why would they bring 200 guys off the street just to furlough? Any official announcements?

Ottopilot 07-29-2011 10:37 AM

VRF (not VFR). It's voluntary reduced flying. You can get one or two weeks off a month without pay. CAL has been doing this for years. In September the schedule is trimmed, so they will need less pilots. That means the reserves can continue to fly 90 hours a month.

It stands for Voluntary Reduction in Flying. It is not aribtrary, but a formula that the union and the company agreed to. It is a month-to-month staffing formula in which, if there are too many pilots (according to the formula, not reality), then the company offers a 7 or 11 day unpaid time off the next month in any/all seats that apply. The number the company can authorize are limited, but no one knows what that it is unti you bid it. It then goes in seniority order when awarding it. If you get it, then they block 7 or 11 days off on your schedule as unpaid time off. When you bid your monthly schedule these days are blocked for duty, and you get a commensurately reduced line value.

Ottopilot, you beat me to it.

Ottopilot 07-29-2011 10:55 AM

You said it better though.

Thanks. Not a bad deal if you want to work part time. Ever get down to the reserves?

Are you kidding me????

A good deal is everyone being paid guarantee while the lines get easier and the reserves get a break.

A bad deal is a few guys getting more days off with much less pay while everyone else gets a continuation of the summer beating.

Do you really want to be seasonally employed for the rest of your career? This is a Frank Lorenzo/Carl Icahn scheduling technique.

How did the expectations of the pilot group get so freaking low?
