It's good to see this in the press, keeping the public aware.

I suppose..... Personally I don't think the public feels too sorry about the airline pilot making 6 figures who sleeps in a camper just because they have the option to live wherever they want. I'm sure many people would love that option in their work... And I commute.

I think its more about negative press for the airline and not so much about feeling sorry for pilots. The airline can't boast that they are best and the global leader if their front line safety professionals can't afford an apartment in their base.

Sad to say, but this press is nothing new.
When the Alaska Pilots were going through there CBA dance, The LA Times chimed in too on an identical read (2009). Not saying the Press is "unhelpful", but it's certainly not germane to that of UAL Pilots.

Some of the "ghettos" in the pictures cost as much as my house (and I like my house!) Hopefully I can have one of those some day, although I'd rather park it at Custer State Park.

Interesting story, but I don't think it helps the cause.

I'm with you on that. Get a cheap car, split a $2,000/month apartment with 6 other pilots...Easily affordable.

I have a feeling poverty isn't running rampant in "the ghetto"

I think I'd rather have my own RV for $120/mo than split an apartment with 6 other dudes for $340+/mo.

This actually backfires in the eyes of the public because they can read between the lines.

"Let's see, these pilots live in Phoenix and commute to LAX??? Don't most people live in the same area they work and to commute means to drive a couple of hours???"

American tried this same ploy years ago and featured a pilot who lived in Florida and flew out of ORD. Backfired when he wined about how many days off he lost because of the commute.

Get real boys and girls, it's a nice motor home.

Just look at some of the comments people are posting in those links. We are spoiled, whining pilots...
