L-CAL Hiring and references

OK, here's a question several of us were debating at work yesterday.

If applying to L-CAL, will L-UAL references be useful, not matter, or potentially hurt an applicants chances?

Not matter. The old CAL and old UAL hiring processes are gone. New hires are coming to the merged UAL with a new process. They will just happen to be trained on the CAL fleet to start their career at UAL.

Here's a great hook to get an interview. Anything (good) that gets the attention of the hiring folks.

Pilot plays piano for hours for stranded travelers

Umm, yeah... I think my piano (and guitar for that matter) skills would probably cause a revolt in the airport... :)

You're saying that internal references will not be of any use? What about internal letters of recommendation from pilots who you have flown with?

I always understood internal recs to be valuable.

They're not valuable, they're essential. You won't get hired without them.

Absolutely they still are! As part of the new process though. At the old LCAL a pilot could talk to a CP and the CP could basically get an interview for the prospect. New process still takes recs but it seems more formalized and I don't think CPs can guarantee an interview on the spot like that.

So you're saying I can let my airlineapps membership lapse because I don't know any United guys?

Job fairs, I'm guessing that's the only other route.

Your kidding I hope or at least I hope you aren't doing the hiring.

As a commuter I ride the jumpseat on RJ's all the time. I had one Capt ask for my email address so he could send me a link to a recommendation form. After observing the professionalism he displayed on that flight, I gladly wrote a very positive recommendation.
