UAL hiring Guard Guys?
 

Are any of the new hires seeing any active Guard or Reserve guys in class? There is a nasty rumor floating around that UAL has been burned too many times and are not considering them for the job. I'm skeptic about that rumor though.. Just sayin...

what UAL ? the old one, pre-CAL ? because any major hiring and then "getting burned" would have been from that era. How did they "get burned". My understanding is that the current hiring activity by UAL/CAL is the first ramp up of hiring since a long time ago.

you asked this already somewhere else. for 2000 years, airlines have hired active duty, reserve, and Guard.

It is a just a rumor. I recently did interview prep for a guy who was active duty and is transitioning to a guard position. It was never mentioned during the interview and he was hired.

back in the last hiring (2007) they (United) were concerned that they weren't getting enough Mil guys of any variety. I don't know who decided on points for different aircraft types on the current bubblesheet for hours, but back in 2007 there was a concious effort to ensure that a year's worth of military flying was worth at least as much as a year's worth of civilian flying a guy would get at a regional.

So, I would be very surprised if a Mil guy didn't fare very well in the application and interview process.

I just flew with a captain who is one of the many interviewers. The way he described the process to me seems that it is somewhat on "autopilot" until the prospective candidate gets to the simulator and the interview. In other words I think you get points awarded electronically to get the call. I imagine it is possible to put negative points on active Guard pilots, but given the number of current Guard pilots on the line and at the training center this would be hard to keep a secret and I would consider that rumor highly unlikely.

On a separate note I would add that the captain who does interviewing said that at present we are accepting about 80% of the pilots that make to the interview process, but many interviewees are showing up in old loafers or similar non-interview like attire. So my one piece of advice to any UAL interviewees is to dress sharp; it helps make a favorable impression.

I responded to your other thread, but just in case one gets deleted, I'll post it again. I know of 7 Guard guys from 2 different squadrons that have been hired by UAL recently.

While I understand that you have to play the game, I have never really understood requiring a suit and tie. Nice Polo, slacks, and dress shoes (even loafers) are just fine. This goes really for any job, not just flying. Some of the most professional looking pilots I have ever seen are corporate pilots (in above stated outfits). They look WAY more sharp than your standard 1 each, airline uniform. ...if I were king (CEO) for a day!

Anyway, off to get my suit dry cleaned...

I was a CAL hire before the merger while being guard and I know about 5-6 guys hired in the past 4 months that were guard dogs.. 2 AMC, 3 ACC

Not only National Guard, but Army National Guard. I was hired and just finished training and I am waiting on IOE. I went to the interview in a dark suit with a red tie. I'm pretty sure that is why I was hired. I would leave the khaki's and loafers at home....just saying :D

It is mind numbing watching what some wear and even more painful to what they say and do. One guy admitted to being on a lot of FOs no fly list....really.

Just curious, do quals have anything to do with whether or not one is hired once they make it to the actual interview? Or is everyone on a level playing field at that time? Just curious if others having more experience could cause one with less to be turned down.
