Wow. Watching the videos. It appears one MAJOR difference with Jepp is that you can really screw yourself with the AVOID commands....leaving trips in the supply pool so they can't even be considered. That was not possible with exUAL PBS. You could score an AVOID but the solver may award 0 points and award you trips that violated your AVOID command. I am too old to learn this new sheet. :)

So, start it all off with an AWARD Work L-- command to get all trips out of the supply pool.

I add all of my avoids on top, then add my awards below. I usually get my top 2 bid groups on average, but I am 40%.

Remember, the avoid string only applies to lines below it.

Yep, welcome to the line leveler...this system given the proper staffing numbers has the potential to work, yet it has never been given those staffing numbers, so its solution is to level the playing field by robbing from the rich and giving to the poor...it runs and runs and runs and eventually is manually stopped and the remains (slop) are inserted by human hand. Get used to the words - Unable to build line due to Overall Solution Constraints (they may have changed the wording a little but its still the same meaning). You need to be above 40% BES or CAT now to see any potential bidding power and even that is very conservative based on how liberal your bids are and how limiting you are with your Avoid statements. You can stagger and chain link embed the Avoids and Awards in one bid line which seem to have the best outcome since there is no guarantee your line choices will get X number of looks at by the system. It is not dynamic by any means but rather a means of the number system cranking over and over until the lines "appear" fair to the PBS admins. It is not like the Flicka Jetblue system where you can dynamically see how your inputs change or the plausibility others changes may have. All in all, this PBS system sucks in its current for and is so complicated that any errors are untraceable after the awards are given due to the complexity variables of the award solution in itself. It's like playing Rummicube where one person goes off on a tangent to try and eliminate all his tiles but when confronted with an unsolvable situation can not return to the starting path because the road to go back and the breadcrumb trail has disappeared or become obfuscated by the system itself. I'm approximately 10% and PBS is the best thing to happen to my schedule ever.

However, there is a caveat...you must learn the Boolean logic and command sequence of operation within bid groups and you must have a clear grasp of what your seniority can realistically hold. Being deficient in these two points causes many pilots to appear "less than full."

I'm trying to figure out these statements. I put AVOID (whatever) and they don't appear in my trip pool. For 10 months I've had the same 20 bid groups (modified slightly for vacation months) with the first five being VERY restrictive with many AVOIDS and selective AWARD. I've been awarded my 1st or 2nd bid group each of the last 10 months with with only 10-20 trips total in those two bid groups.

Again, the order you place the AVOID statements in relation to AWARD statements can play a role. For me, I place my SET criteria first, all of my AVOID statements next (which gets everything I don't want out of the pool) and then my AWARD preferences next with weights.

I've finally gotten the hang of this PBS program and have been happy with the results and I wouldn't say I'm "senior" by any stretch of the imagination.

It does take some getting used to, but I like it a lot. I did not like it when it first came out in 2006, but after a few months it grew on me.
