I've seen this carry on enforcement at the gate first hand on a trip with Aer Lingus, both at LHR and DUB. It's not a good policy for a supposed top tier global airline. It just slows the boarding process at the jetway entrance vs on the plane, and is one more thing we do that is not "Flyer Friendly". At the rate we're going, the UAL experience will be no different than an LCC, except our fares will be higher.
