There is a two flight commuter clause in the UPA. If you dont get on the first flight, you can call scheduling and make them aware. They can choose to give you positive space on the second. If you miss the trip, you lose the pay. I dont recommend you try and use this while you are on probation.....just saying. Oh, one more thing, when the weather is bad, the company sends out a message on CCS advising all commuters to plan accodingly. For me, I take the pain and do whatever I have to do in order to be in position. That often means long naps in the lazy boy at the CPO.

Correct. No, No, and yes. The only time they'll "help" is if they positive space you for need. You'll be behind a lot of non-pilots on the Nonrev list as well. The couple times I called about a commute they just said, "Good luck. Keep us informed." Never been close to out of position yet though.

Thanks for all the good intel and experiences. Somehow I'm still holding out hope that SFO and LAX will be junior enough to get within a year to 18 months if the hiring stays at a constant rate. Maybe I'm dreaming. Commuting from BOI doesn't really favor anywhere unfortunately.

LAX to IAH has been super easy. I've had to call scheduling twice when the first flight got spotty and both times they positive spaced me on that airplane. I do tend to end up in the cockpit a lot.

Ding ding ding ding. While on probation, for the LOVE OF GOD please don't miss a trip on your commute. I remember going early the morning the day before a trip sometimes if the loads looked bad. Back them you couldn't use a pass for the first 6 months, so it was the jumpseat or nothing. And since passes cost money, I got bumped several times by some senior captain who didn't want to pay the $7 to ride in the back. Nice.

Just do what you have to do for the first year. Seriously. Don't put yourself in a position where you have to explain why you missed a trip.

Follow the contract and make a good faith effort to make the trip and you will NOT have a problem halfwing or not.

Even on probation, no one is going to hang you for a single oop/missed trip event.. especially if you follow commuter policy, used sound judgement in your commute or have a circumstance arise that is out of your control. things happen. no one is out to get you. -but i certainly wouldn't make a pattern of it.

To the new guys....

Do not be afraid to use the commuter policy if you follow the contract to the "T".

Probation or not it is in the contract and I would not be afraid to use it. The old guys on here are a little paranoid.
