from Howard's Letter
What are you doing about four-day trips, as well as all the deadheading that seems to be occurring? We are aware of the increased volume of deadheads and are looking at this very closely. An analysis is under way to determine the cost of four-day pairings in the day of operation. We continue to work with the ALPA SSC on the trip length distribution. In the fall, we will commence the process of moving toward right sizing our bases so we can reduce the amount of flying that is forced into a particular base. This should help with trip distribution. Let the games (displacements) begin!! |
What a bag of air.
3+ years into the merger and their just now figuring out that manpower might be askew? Giving the benefit of doubt, they've had the UPA to deal with for the last 18 months, but that's more than enough time IMO. History will show how hopelessly in over their heads this management is, but like you say, enjoy the displacements! |
FA's the other day were sent out a message talking about this. They're planning on October for moving people around.

From what ive heard "right sizing" the bases means right sizing the equipment in each base. Instead of having a huge 320 base in ORD, DEN, and IAD and a huge 737 base in EWR and IAH, they want to "right size" these bases. They want to spread the 737s out system wide as the 320 is. In other words, grow the old 320 bases with the 73, and grow the old 73 bases with the 320. Thats what I heard but who knows.

So how does the displacement language work? Do they have to provide us positive space to and from the new base for a certain amount of time? Hotels? Any incentive to voluntary bid a new base? I live in base now and not going to move, but wondering if I get bumped out or even get bumped down to reserve and want to be a line holder in another base, what will my options be. Also do you keep the same vacation days/Golden Days off if you are displaced?

If only that info was written down someplace---like a document that was signed by UAL and ALPA.....
Yeah, you are right. |

Read up and return with specific questions. And yes, there is plenty of apparently contradictory and confusing language in the UPA. :) |
Nah, I should have looked there FIRST and then post this....
I read over Section 8-E. A few things... A) It sounds expensive to displace. As it should be. B) I couldn't find anything concerning vacation in 8-E or Section 11. Does this mean they can't change it? |

Yup.
Anytime you change your base, equipment, or seat you lose your previously awarded vacation if it is scheduled after your activation date. The time simply gets credited back to your bank for use in monthly vacation bidding for the remainder of the vacation year. |

I think you might be right with the last vacancy there were plenty of 320FO's that bid to the 756 and 76T with no backfill in the 320's. Kinda heard the same thing too about the 737's right sizing but that was also in 4th Q of last year. |
If you are displaced, I believe you keep your vacation

11-F-5 and/or 11-F-6 apply, to paraphrase: If you get bumped and require training the company can cancel your vacation. If you get bumped and do not require training, you might be able to keep your vacation, restrictions apply. |

However, with the new rig feature coming up this fall, I believe that this will cure the issue with all of the 4 day pairings. |

I have a hard time believing that they will displace due to the expense of it all, especially with all of the training back logged as it is now.

At the rate that we are getting 737 replacements, I don't see it being a big issue with us losing 37 757's. The 757's aren't going away overnight.
But I'm not worried about it. I didn't want to be a 737 Capt even though I could hold it. I know that you are excited about the possibility of displacements as are most long term L-UAL First Officers. Patience, you'll get that left seat soon with the amount of retirements. |

Patience, you'll get that left seat soon with the amount of retirements. 37 - 57s are gone just in 2014. Many more next year. Guys don't have to bid off em without a displacement. It's just business. Most guys in Denver are sitting tight. No displacements? No problem. There's always home improvement projects or lake/mountain time on 73 hours pay...talk about expense! Watch and see...there will be bumps. |
