iPad Special Assignment

Anybody know if the emails/calls went out for the iPad job? I applied, but am not buddy buddy with anyone at TK.

You really need to learn the secret handshake. Go watch the movie "road trip". Learn that !:D

Mitch Rapp05 12-26-2014 05:11 AM

Unfortunately, it appears that the application process is just a dog and pony show. It's who you know that counts and nothing else. Just look around at the faces in the CPO and all the other Special Assignments.

B727gypsy 12-27-2014 09:32 AM

I applied as well (with pretty low expectations since I'm not in the Old Boy network) but I think the application window just closed Friday before Christmas.

My guess is they will be figuring it out after New Years.

I know everyone's situation is different, but you guys signed-up to sit in ops every weekday for 3 months passing out iPads?

What's the draw?

Dave Fitzgerald 12-27-2014 10:40 AM

The draw might be if you have to commute vs. do the iPad thing at home. Be paid 90 hrs to be at home every night instead of commute? Sign me up, I also applied, but have not heard anything back.

Unfortunately, I do know some people in the office. That'll probably work against me, worked hard for that reputation!

You mean go into the office everyday? Hard to believe that would somehow be considered a better deal, different strokes I suppose.

oldmako 12-27-2014 05:04 PM

Perhaps someone has an ill or elderly parent who requires constant or significant care? Or maybe a new or special needs child? This isn't really all that hard to grasp. And if pulling a few shifts in the office (as opposed to boring holes in the sky and sleeping in hotels) is what it took to earn that time, I'd go for it. If this is a mysterious concept to you, well, congratulations. And may you never earn the gift of perspective. Till then, party on Wayne.

These old iPads really aren't up to the task. I hope they hurry up with disbursement.

iPad Special Assignment

You must have missed the meeting with the Bobs! Or left the cover sheets off of your TPS reports.

Regularguy 01-02-2015 08:25 AM

Let's see, you're jr and will get probably 90 hrs pay plus expenses for the special assignment. Now compare that to 73 hours and short call????

Nah it's a bad deal!

;)

Mitch Rapp05 01-06-2015 04:09 PM

Anybody get a call about this yet?

Not yet either way.

Dave Fitzgerald 01-07-2015 06:45 AM

Well, since the new iPads were supposed to be deployed by now, not surprised UAL misses another time line.

And, no, no word for me either way.

ron kent 01-07-2015 06:27 PM

FO I just flew with said he was going to Ipad trainer training in ORD this week. I think that train has left the station.

liveupthere 01-07-2015 08:14 PM

lame...i also heard nothing

SpecialTracking 01-08-2015 06:26 AM

Do you guys really think you were applying for this job? I bet those positions were already spoken for and the application process was just going through the motions. Every time we go to these required training programs BET, Fuel 1 and 2, Safety Stand Downs, it's always the same people doling out the info.

APC225 01-09-2015 05:15 AM

FWIW on another board a guy-who-knows-a-guy who flew with an FO who is going to training for this assignment. So the people may have already been notified.

Yep, I agree. I was hoping that maybe something had changed. Oh well.

My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who met an iPad trainer at 31 Flavors last night said they already picked the people.

So I guess that's official.

Uhh uhh....I wonder how they made their selections. Not that I'm disappointed, but my qualifications are pretty good, and can't imagine too many others better qualified. Maybe another friends of Fred program?

Maybe I'm overthinking this, maybe it's as simple as they're too cheap to pay a captain for what they consider an F/O job....

I hate to burst your bubble but... There are plenty of captains who got the job. The one that I know personally is also one of the good old boys...

That is funny. You consider yourself better qualified than most to mete out iPads. Go get em tiger!

oldmako 01-27-2015 06:55 AM

Clearly your Marvin score was too low. Do you think DF would have been turned away if he applied?

Dave Fitzgerald 01-27-2015 07:58 AM

Mako--you could be right, I'm certain my Marvin score is in the negative territory.

Who knew that the talent pool was so shallow that putting on a button up shirt and passing out iPads was competitive? I'd count myself lucky to be on the outside looking in with this goat rope.

For all the "training" we'll get, why not hire someone from the Apple Store or a use flight ops interns?

I applied as well thinking there was more to it than passing out iPads. On my second furlough I did an iPad special project that was a nice change of pace. We put together an iPad EFB program from scratch, got FAA Certification and did the training. Similar setup with Jepp View, WSI but an off the shelf content reader. Program also developed iPad for use flight planning, load planning and electronic log book.

What was it that made you think that it would be any more than an asset accounting exercise?

Just an opinion because if it was just passing out things and getting a signature the flight office could do it. I thought maybe some actual instruction might occur.

Anyway it sounded interesting to me based on the iPad project I had done while furloughed. No matter because my qualifications were not competitive. If the job is only handing things out I will be happy that I wasn't selected.

What's the timeline on the iPad replacements? Are they handing out the new ones to new-hires now or are they still giving out the old ones?

Noobs are still receiving the old iPads presently

They are told supposedly within a couple months new iPads either air/air2 with 4g/3G international will be replacements...hence the iPad folks.

Airhoss 01-29-2015 12:28 AM

I talked to the I pad people at TK a couple of days ago. Apparently the FAA is holding us up at the moment.

3rd week of December I heard 2nd week of Jan. Since that has come and passed, ????????????????????????????

Hilltopper89 01-29-2015 07:32 AM

All I know is that it can't come too soon. This thing is so slow and locks up a couple times a day. That and since we got the RAM mounts in the 73 I've cracked the screen twice.

It's a touch screen, not a punch screen:D

Agreed. Fully. If only the thing wouldn't fail every other flight.
