International jumpseat policy

Hello United pilots I had a question regarding international jumpseat policy while jumpseating with you guys. I tried to jumpseat from Delhi to Newark on a L-cal metal. As a jumpseater I'm listed in coach & can't list myself in business as gate agents are the one who do the listing for me. On this particular flight the coach was sold out however there were 17 seats available in business. The gate agent told me that they cannot accommodate me as I'm only listed in coach & there are no seats available. I asked if I could talk to the captain to see if he can authorize a seat in business. They called him up but told me they weren't going to stick around for his answer since they had to get the flight out.

Now in this instance what is the policy? As an offline jumpseater on an international flight can I not sit in a business class seat if coach is sold out?

However, I would like to thank the crews that have upgraded me numerous times you guys rock! :)

The CA can put you anywhere he wants, the agents in DEL will routinely lie to your face to get the flight out. If at all possible try to speak to the crew when they get to the terminal, they usually arrive about two hours prior to the flight.

Yeah you should have been put in business anyway! I guess that captains need to take the "walk" internationally too.

The agents processed you correctly. You can not be given a seat in United first (that is the name of that cabin on two class airplane). They have to have a seat to assign you in Y class. That is our policy. Once the door is closed the captain can put you wherever he wants but you technically need a y seat to get from gate to plane.

If they agent gave you a Firtst seat to get you on the plane they could lose their jobs.

The problem in DEL is they will not let a non rev or JS'er through security unless there is a seat for them, checking the gate area doesn't do any good. Supposedly the station can be fined if a person has to come back through security after clearing it which makes the agents hesitant to send them through without a seat available, I don't know if it's actually true.

BOM has the same policy, best thing is to talk to the crew when they get to the airport- I think it's either door #5 or #6. An agent meets the crew and the CA can tell her right then what he wants done with the JS'er.
