SFO Council 34 WiFi

Notice to all ALPA members:

Council 34, as part of union membership, offers WiFi in the flight ops area, and break rooms, as well as a dedicated computer to the membership.

When the company finally rolls out the new iPads, we will be turning off the WiFi. Last time the company rolled out the iPads, the company SkiFi was so overloaded the iPad SME's were telling pilots to use the union benefit WiFi to update company property. This is not kosher. We have made clear that they are not to do this again. Many of you may have read the ALPA update stating that the iPads are yet again delayed from the March 4th roll out date. I do not know when the new implementation date is.

However, as a result, the ALPA WiFi will be turned off when the iPads are disbursed. We have the speed and bandwidth to handle just about anything, (better than SkiFi) but ALPA backstopping the companies lack of infrastructure will not happen again.

I do not know if other councils might be considering this same action. The ALPA computer will remain on and available to those who might use it.

Why doesn't ALPA just sell some bandwidth to the company and make some coin? :)

Aren't the new iPads using T-Mobile LTE (i.e. they don't need WiFi)?

Why not advise the company that C-34 will require a fee to use the wifi for a minimum of 6 months and that we want an agreement that they will allow C-34 to Expense the cost to the company for a minimum of 6 months. I can't believe the SME's will tie it up 24/7. That is a win win situation

SFO Council 34 WiFi

That'll teach 'em...

This seems similar to our buddy pass privileges getting changed recently. Make everyone pay for the actions of a few...

Yup. But, it sounds like it's a 1GB/mo. plan.

Plenty of bandwidth for doing flight planning (probably) but not so much for a month of planning combined with Content Locker, Jepp, WSI, and company email downloads. And especially so for the initial setup when everything must be installed.

I'm just waiting for the memo telling folks to ensure you are on wifi for everything but planning.

It is unlimited data. The 1GB/mo is the limit for high-speed data. After that the speed drops to Edge which is something less than 3G speeds.

Too funny, so the WiFi expense reports continue!

Do the new iPads have the capability to be a hotspot...like my iPhone?
