Default C-171 Election. Messages

Jeff Bohl for Council 171 Captain's Representative.

One of the most important LEC ALPA Elections to take place in years opens Friday for the professional pilots of the Houston United Airlines domicile. I would ask that those of you who read this email take a few minutes and forward it to all of the United Pilots in your contact list. Talk about this in the cockpit, do some research on the candidates and ask those who have stepped back to consider how important their vote can be.

This election opens Friday, November 6th and closes on December 10th.

All of us need to be engaged in the process of running our union and it starts at the LEC level. As a line pilot with over 26 years of service at this proud airline, I'm asking for your support. I am not an ALPA politician and I have never worked in the flight office. I am a line pilot. Each and every one of you have the power to have your voices heard at the highest levels of the United Master Executive Council. Don't let 2% of the pilots manage your future. Please do your research and take the time to vote. Let's show the rest of the councils that Houston pilots care and want to be heard.

Over the next few weeks I will be sending out a series of messages detailing my positions.

L-Cal LTD:

This is an important issue that affects over 60 percent of the Houston based pilots. Council 171 Vice Chairman, Captain Drebo, has done a great deal of work over the last few months regarding the L-Cal LTD Funds. He has agreed to continue to offer his expertise in this matter, if I am elected. I fully support his position and agree that the funds should be returned to those pilots that have paid. We are all United pilots now but this issue needs to be fairly settled for the L-Cal pilots.

Unity:

“Proud of my past, excited about our future.”

One of my greatest desires as your Captain Representative will be to foster council unity. I presently serve the Houston United pilots as the Council 171 Professional Standards Chairman. The integration of both legacy pilots and new hires with varied backgrounds is going very well. As more and more of the Houston flying is flown with pilots from both legacy airlines, I can tell you that we are working together very well. I am proud to live and fly out of Houston. However, when it comes to negotiations and contract compliance, the company doesn't care what color uniform you've worn, or your flying background. The best way to get their attention is through unity. “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together”. My fellow pilots, please take the time to be part of the process.

I ask for your support and vote as your Council 171 Captain's Representative.

Nicholas Harwood for UAL LEC 171 First Officer Representative

Fellow pilots of LC171,

The overwhelming support that I have received from so many of you in nominating me as your candidate for First Officer Representative has been inspiring. Thank you all and thank you also to my fellow pilots who stepped up and volunteered to serve. I am, and will always be, in awe of those who have been, and continue to be, willing to offer their time and talents for the betterment of their fellow pilots.

Electronic balloting opens in the next few days. This is your chance to influence the future of this council and this pilot group. Please take the time to vote for your chosen candidates. If you, the pilots of Council 171, choose to put your trust in me, know this: I will passionately pursue one, and only one, agenda – working for you, the pilots of United Airlines. You can expect me to be open and honest and to always conduct myself with integrity, dignity and respect for all my fellow pilots. There will be no drama - just nose to the grindstone, working towards excellence in representation.

In today’s email, let me address some of the areas I will be focusing on at the Local level:

· Vigorous defense of the UPA and its provisions.
· Strong representation for pilots at the CPO Level (Investigatory/Disciplinary)
· Promoting Pilot Unity which is always critical but especially now as we head into contract negotiations.
· Promoting active involvement and participation in our union and a continued willingness to serve on our LEC committees.
· Enhancing effective Communications with particular emphasis on expanding use of our LC171 website which can and should be a ONE-STOP shop for all the information our pilots need.

In summary, there is a lot of work to do and much at stake over the next few years. The right team of dedicated representatives can and will achieve a great deal but we cannot do it without your help. Every one of you is a highly skilled, highly trained and very experienced professional. However, we are also unionists, and we forget that at our peril. We must act as one, standing together, strong and unified, because nothing harms our careers (and benefits the Company) more than being a fractured employee group. I respectfully ask you to remember that, no matter our backgrounds, we are all tied together by a common purpose and we cannot succeed unless we stay UNITED, INFORMED and ENGAGED.

Once again, thank you for your support. I remain readily available to listen to your input and answer questions and look forward to meeting many of you face-to-face at meetings, in the crew rooms and onboard our aircraft. I humbly ask for your vote for First Officer Representative.

Sincerely,

Nicholas Harwood

Ladies and Gentlemen of Council 171,

ELECTION SEASON IS ALMOST OVER!!!!!! If you have not received your email link to ALPA to cast your vote for the new council officers, you soon will. This is the elective part of the process, so this is your last chance to vote. I am once more soliciting your support for council Secretary/Treasurer.

Again these are my tenets:

I will endeavor to provide clear, concise, and timely communication between the council and you.

I will continue to foster the good relationship between the council and our new IAH chief pilot.

I will build upon the good work our current council has done on the council website, and expand its use.

I am committing myself to give up my free time to you, the members of C171. To promote our interests, protect our base, and when necessary fight for you.

For those who don’t remember my background: I grew up in Texas and graduated from Texas A&M. I served 10 years in the Air Force flying C-141Bs and KC135s. I was Squadron Chief of Safety, a Flight Commander, and Chief of Standardization/Evaluation. Since I’ve been at United I have been on the 727, 737, A320 and most recently the 777. I am an ALPA volunteer and most recently have served on the C171 safety and membership committees.

Whomever YOU decide to vote for, please take the five minutes to cast your ballot. Don’t let 10% of the membership decide the election for you.

Fellow Houston pilots:

With nomination ballots counted we move on to the election ballot. It cannot be stressed enough how important these elections are. Houston is one of the largest, if not the largest, bases at United Airlines, and with that size comes enormous potential if the right leadership is in place. I firmly believe that I would be the right choice for Secretary/Treasurer, and I ask that you vote for Jamie Call to be your next Houston Secretary/Treasurer.

Council leadership not only serves as your leadership representatives here on the Local level, but they also serve as your voice at the MEC Executive table. Additionally, it is the council leaderships’ job to keep its’ members informed and engaged. Staying informed and engaged is the best way to build unity. Below are a just a few of the things I vow to do as Secretary/Treasurer here in Houston to ensure our pilots are well represented, informed, and engaged:

Local:

1) Timely blast emails! Just like our passengers, the Houston pilots deserve the right to know what’s going in their union. Things are constantly changing in the industry whether it’s a new creative interpretation of the UPA by management, a change in corporate structure, or changes in the environment we operate in. There needs to be timely communication from our local representatives on these and other issues.

2) Along the communication line is our local council website. This is a great potential resource for Houston pilots, but it is currently lacking in content. Having a local council website that has all the up-to-date information our pilots need is crucial. My goal is to have our council website be the choice when information is sought by membership.

3) Timely, and punctual council meetings. For those who have been to recent council meetings (nomination meeting excluded) have no doubt seen how they can go well beyond a reasonable amount of time. Having a detailed meeting agenda published prior to the meeting, and adhering to that agenda is a must. That adherence will make these meetings a lot easier to attend, and should increase attendance.

Executive:

1) The Chairman and Vice Chairman are the Houston pilots’ voice at the MEC table, and as Secretary/Treasurer I will be able to advise and help guide Houston leadership to ensure Houston issues are an important part of the agenda. I will work tirelessly with the other councils to build consensus on their issues, which in turn would aid in gaining support for Houston issues.

2) The CAL LOL/LTD excess is an issue that affects a majority of the Houston base, and I assure you that I will continue to work on getting all monies paid to those who are owed.

It cannot be overstated that participation in the Houston council is low. Whatever the reason it simply doesn’t matter, it’s time to forge ahead. The company is already testing the waters, as you know, when they approached our union wanting to talk about an extension to the UPA. The company knows the leverage we have and I firmly believe they are trying to get us to cash in early. As we approach 2016 we need to show the company that the Houston pilots are unified. If elected Secretary/Treasurer here in Houston I intend to see to it that this council is the most unified at United Airlines. Below my signature line is some good voting information to get you all set up to vote. Thank you, and I would greatly appreciate your vote!

All the best,

Jamie Call
