Finally...

Illy coffee being served on all United flights beginning in 2016! :)

Did you, or any one else, catch the article about how and why this change is taking place?

United Airlines' big coffee review comes after a questionable decision years ago - Chicago Business Journal

This is a view of how this whole "merger" was done (after the fact). It was never about making a "better" product by combining the "best" of both airlines. It was always about benefitting a small group of elite people at the top.

Not to place blame on just the lCAL side; the lUAL group cashed out and left. They could care less about the outcome or future of UAL, the deal was done.

Now let's pick up the pieces and move on!

It is also a good example on how once bridges are burned they had very hard to rebuild. Notice Starbucks was not in the mix to return their coffee to UAL.

Fresh 11-19-2015 09:50 AM

Interesting, el jeffe even managed to **** that up to.

oldmako 11-19-2015 10:25 AM

Besides getting the fleet repainted fairly quickly, and buying us (largely worthless for the first 2-3 years) ipads, did he do anything that wasn't detrimental to the brand, to the employees or the pax? Just scratching my head.

Use the term "Jeff up". Works great, lasts a long time. And don't have to worry about the software censoring ;)

Anybody out there potty training kids? Tell them to use the word "Smisek" when they have to go.

Fresh 11-19-2015 12:33 PM

Roger that, I will be asking my toddler if she needs to take a "smisek". :)

Dunkin is better. The northeast crowd would go nuts if we started carrying that. Oscar? You listening? :D

Only if you're from the NE. I was born there but quickly realized Dunkin wasn't all that as soon as I went to college in the South. I'd now drive 5 miles past a Dunkin to hit a Starbucks. And there a MANY better donut shops and local bakeries.

I'd walk from C136 in EWR to the Dunkin in C1 (before that got Jeffed up) before I'd stop at the Starbucks at the top of the terminal. :p. I grew up in the south, but I don't see any Krispy Kremes at any of our airports. Waffle House would be a good choice too.

We can agree on Krispy Kreme and Waffle House!

3 over easy, chunked and peppered with raisin toast. If only Waffle House served good Cuban coffee!

reCALcitrant 11-19-2015 04:59 PM

B6 already has dunkin donuts.

Illy is a much better coffee, in my opinion, than any other mass produced coffee. It will also be well received by our first class passengers.

oldmako 11-19-2015 05:26 PM

Used Cat Litter would be an improvement.

No kidding. I usually drink coffee black. With this smiseck I had to fill the cup 1/3 sugar 1/3 cream.

BMEP100 11-19-2015 05:53 PM

Before the Smisek induced Freshbrew dishwater, CAL was serving Tim Horton's. It was well received.

WesternSkies 11-19-2015 06:08 PM

The bean is important but keeping the current water and makers dooms it. Doooom.

Never had illy coffee but the espresso is highly circulated and very meh.

On red eyes and when constipated.

I was fully invested in the conspiratorial view behind how Freshbrew landed the single contract... when a FA turned my worldview upside down last week. I was helping myself to some used motor oil during a break and bemoaning not having Starbucks available, when he told me he has a brother-in-law or somesuch who is a senior exec there. He said flat out that the selection of Freshbrew had nothing to do with UAL mgmt shenanigans. Rather, Starbucks withdrew from consideration when it inspected and discovered contaminated water/pots/etc. onboard (the leadoff article to this thread even touched on it). I was stunned at the thought it could have been due to simple UAL buffoonery and not Machiavellian maneuvers.

But I've realized that Starbucks probably just wanted to avoid the shame of potentially losing a rigged competition! Worldview... right side up!

I'd have been thrilled with Dunkin Donuts coffee onboard. But I tried Illy at the CPO yesterday and it was a very noticeable improvement over the old laxative.

But was it brewed with the "potable" water from the aircraft?!

No kidding... Good grounds still tastes like shiza if they use the toilet water.

Well, I'd venture to guess that the coffee pots at the CPOs are teeming with more bacteria than those onboard. As for "potable" water supplies... I hope they maybe use the bottled water. We bring enough onboard, so why not? Gotta ask on my next trip.

This.

As a non-coffee drinking transplant to New England, I don't get it. But the brand loyalty borders on the obsessive.

But I think JetBlue has an exclusive on Dunkies inflight.

The 737 coffee maker is plumbed directly to the potable water system. Ditto for the A320 and I'm presuming all the other Boeings in the fleet.

I'm not familiar with all the Express carriers and fleets but I have witnessed the FAs on ExpressJet ERJ-145s filling the small tank in the galley with bottled water.

I do recall when UAL first starting using Starbucks that Starbucks mandated a specific cleaning schedule for the makers/pots/tanks (this was mentioned in the internal announcement about Starbucks.) The coffee was fine until the spam hit the fan post-9/11 and anything that cost $$$ was dropped. Frankly, I'm surprised Starbucks put up with UAL as long as they did.
