Do I get a cool lanyard for my $50/month?

Why only 50 ?!
What fraction of ONE hour a month is that?

That's $600 per year.

Very nice.

We also pay over $40 million per year in dues.

Not complaining, just kind of wondering what ALPA is doing with the windfall of the last few years. You don't hear much about it.

How about you deride the 75% that give zero?

If they each gave a measly $50/month that would be close to $5.5m for the PAC per year, just from UAL.

I certainly see the need to lobby with all that is going on with the foreign carriers and I give to the PAC myself however I did have one problem with the way it was shoved down our throats in Indoc. It basically came across as you all better give or we'll know who didn't and we'll talk to you about it. One person did not elect to give any money as their significant other already does and they were pulled aside and questioned as to why. That left a bad impression of intimidation for those who came from non union operators. It shouldn't have felt like that.

Don't over think it. ALPA volunteers have one shot to visit with and lobby new hires and would love to get feedback and debrief if there's a problem. The new hire classes have been phenomenal during the last few years with most at 100% participation. That participation rate should be a point of pride with new hires and reps alike and speaks to the recognition that company pays pilots, ALPA fills in the amount.

Maybe we shouldn't hire from "non-union" operators.

We don't need any "army of 1" types. This job requires a strong union.

New hires here can hold 777 F/O after 2 years. At that point, they will be making about $180 per hour. That's how much heavy Captains were making a few years ago….with 25 years+!!!!

All this will change if we don't take care of the ME3.

Ok - point taken.

So to answer my question - how much of one hour at your longevity is 50 bucks ? Another 30 bucks gets you to Behnke level.

You sound like the former Skywest guy that rode in the jumpseat a little while back to SFO. He was all PROUD about coming from a non-Union carrier. That raised my eyebrows a little but the accusation that the female ALPA PAC volunteer that talked to his class intimidated and coerced a 100% participation rate. That was a little hard to believe - which I told this half-winger.

He has MGT written all over him........
You'd think he would be happy being at the big show but the way he talked about his rj days ...... *** LoL

I was a mil leave return and sat through the presentation by ALPA towards the end of BI. I agree with your description... The membership chair (female with accent) was way over the top and pretty much scared new hires into joining... Not the right approach IMO. I bet many, if not all, cancel PAC auto contributions after the first year due to situations like BI presentations... Need either a new chair or new approach rather than arm twisting.

Exactly this. It's not about non union guys coming here (Mil, SKW, Non airline). Like I said I'm all about the PAC. The one who didn't pay came from an APLA carrier. It was more so the presentation. It could be given a bit more gracefully not causing the class to walk out on break saying "*** was that?"
