We (wife and I) have Tricare Prime. We pay $565.20 per year. We have doctors at the Nellis Hospital so we don't have copays.

We're happy with our medical care; our only complaint is the wait for getting prescriptions filled on base. If we have the time, we'll get prescriptions filled on base - if not, we'll pay the tiny copay for prescriptions filled off base.

$400K still buys a lot of house in nice areas. Our house is just south of Aliante casino and is worth maybe $350K. 2900SF, 3 car garage + decent sized pool. House is less than 10 years old.
Compare that with LA or SFO area prices.

No different than any other major city in terms of entertainment prices. It's more expensive than Tucson but better performers than Tucson can attract.

How long's it been since you were in McCarren? There's a couple of very quick trains that connect the terminals. Southwest's in Terminal 1 and United/American/Delta's in the D gates. The blue line connects the D gates to terminal 1 and only takes a couple of minutes.

I think he was referring to the highly efficient and easy to switch terminals of the Los Angeles International Airport.

Thanks much; I was wondering what he was talking about WRT T6/7; it now makes sense.

There's a lot less stress commuting home than to work so I didn't even think about that. And SFO's almost as easy to commute to/from LAS as LAX. The advantage of LAX over SFO is that you can drive from LAS-LAX if things go badly.

Commuting's not fun; I'd recommend living in base over commuting to anyone. Hands down.

I know this has been mentioned in other threads, but I can't remember it. What's the call-out time if on reserve (to show and/or wheels up)? Does it vary by base (traffic)?

1. He's retired military. Tricare for retired folks is a LOT more than that.

2. South of Aliante? And you call that nice? I'm talking Summerlin/Anthem. No new hire UAL pilot can afford to live in the DECENT areas of town on their pay.

3. Obviously I was talking about LAX, not LAS.

I guess it all boils down to what an individual finds acceptable.

I'd agree with you on both points there. If you're a VX guy your commute from LAS is a breeze...on line, straight to T3 in LAX or the A gates in SFO. For off line guys its a different story.

Living in base is the way to go, if you can afford it.

Packrat or anybody....what do you know about the Lake Las Vegas area in NE Henderson? Saw some cheap condos on Zillow that sold for BIG money back in 2006-2007.

I'm retired military. That's what it costs. $565.20 per year.

When you're that wrong about Tricare costs, I see no need to engage you on a discussion of the Vegas real estate market. A quick search on realtor.com will find more than 300 3+/2+ houses in Summerlin for under $300K; I suppose you find the only 'acceptable' area of the country to be rural Mississippi.

It's kind of isolated. There are some expensive neighborhoods near the Westin out there.

+1. I am retired as well and it's $565 a year Tricare Prime.

Wouldn't he be off reservs in 6 months? Commuting to sfo isn't bad since you have oak and sjc as a backup. I would do Tahoe over Vegas.
