I live in Doylestown, PA in Bucks County and fly fish the Toheckon Creek fairly regularly. So far I have only seen browns. There are streams all over PA that are stocked with mainly browns and rainbows. There are some streams further north and west of where I live that have native brook trout. I plan on exploring these streams this fall.

Bedford, Pa is a little over a two hour drive from Dulles ... tons of trout fishing in/around Bedford, in particular in the Rainsburg and Cumberland areas. Bedford itself has had a huge revival in the past decade too with the reopening of the Bedford Springs resort. Downtown has a multitude of new restaurants and shopping areas that weren't there before.

Or less unaffordable.

Look at total cost of living, state taxes, property taxes, etc and you'll find DEN beats VA by a wide a wide margin.

According to bankrate, you could take a 25% pay cut and maintain the same standard of living in Denver.

If the OP is dedicated to the east coast, Wisp and Snowshoe aren't bad.... For east coast skiing.

I've lived in BOTH places, it was sarcasm........

I'm from one of the places and live there now, but spent time in the other in in a previous life.

Tangent, we're all rich airline pilots so cost is being extracted. As far as a QOL/activities/weather, etc is concerned one is hands down BETTER THAN THE OTHER. You can NEVER put too much value on living in base, but there's a reason why one is home and I'll always commute till I can hold it as a domicile.

But the recent COL increase in CO/Denver metro area is approaching stupid/unrealistic proportions.

I figured as much but wasn't sure. I too have lived in both places and one of them is a part of the country I'll only move back to kicking and screaming

Same.

It has it's qualities and draws and so I'm not a "hater". But just on my experience I couldn't do it.

Especially at my age and "station in life" as a buddy puts it.

Hey Y'all.

Any insight on a town driving distance to IAD that features trout fishing? The wife and I are looking for a change. Basically, as close to a ski/mountain town feel as possible, as in lots of outdoorsy stuff going on and hopefully some good food etc.

Factors:
Fly fishing.
Hiking/Running trails.
Good schools.
(Please Lord) affordable.

Thanks all.

Ready RSV,

I know you listed IAD, but if you were not set on the east coast much of the area 2.5 hours east of SFO would have all of the above.

Best of luck,
SP

OP, try Northeast PA (also known as the Poconos) with a 1-2 hour drive to EWR.
