Shipping Pets

Anyone ever do this? Do we get an employee rate? Was going to have my wife fly with the dog as cargo, but it looks like at many locations you have to drop it off at the cargo facility rather than the airport. Any pointers appreciated. Thanks.

Ship the wife, spare the dog. Seriously though, do you have any other options?

Take it with you in the cabin.

Man o man, those dogs are popping up everywhere. Sort of a scam now.

That might be true, but if it was your dog would you? I don't blame them.

Pet shipping

We shipped our dog on our metal a couple of years ago in conjuction with a paid move. Used an approved dog kennel, dropped the dog an kennel off at cargo 3 hrs before scheduled departure time. Had the flying pilot verify thst the dog made it onboard and picked the dog up at cargo at destination airport. Domestic flight. No issues. Cost was close to $200 I think. Was refunded as it was part of the move.

Just had a friend ship his dog from EWR to LAX on my flight a few weeks ago. I helped him out since his dog had a traumatic experience with American a few years ago. This flight went smooth. The price to deliver a dog runs from $200 up to $500 for PetSafe that works with UAL, depending upon size of dog. This dog was a 110 pound Golden Retriever and ran $430. Pet safe does walk the dogs about every 3 hours for rest room relief and stretching but ensure your dog goes before heading to airport. This dog was there 11 hours prior to departure. Pet safe is much better with keeping the dogs in the air conditioned van prior to putting on the loader. The dog handled the 5 hour flight well and was in good spirits when being deplaned. Quick ride to the cargo pickup. Like anything, try to avoid shipping the dog on extreme days where the tarmac could be boiling or super cold out.

What city pairs are you looking at?

Depending on the size of the dog, I believe United charges $125 each way to take it in the cabin with you. It just needs to fit within the confines of your seat/personal space.

That's if the animal is a service animal or comfort animal. Otherwise, no can do - must go in cargo bin and you pay more.

If it is a service or comfort animal, it is free, of that I am sure. A call to customer service will confirm that, as well as the ability to pay a fee to carry your pet in the cabin if it is not cleared as a service or comfort animal. I'm just not sure of the price.
