International "Upg" column

I understand that Elite level Frequent fliers get unlimited upgrades on domestic travel. Do they (or some of them) receive upgrades on international segments too? I'm looking at a trans-atlantic flight and it shows 5 upgrades for this evening.
Also, when do these upgrade eligible passengers populate on the pass travel screen? It seemed all were N/A when I looked a week out or so.
Thanks!

Here's everything you ever wanted to know about upgrades on UAL:

1K's get 6 one-way "global upgrades" which can be used on higher fare classes for a free upgrade from coach to business, or business to first.

Anyone else can use frequent flyer miles + $$$ co-pay to upgrade. The amount of $$$ depends on the underlying fare.

Sometimes these upgrades can be used in advance.

United generally will open up all remaining seats for these upgrades the day of travel.

Ive also recently been hearing agents upselling customers into First/Business on international routes at check in. Good for the bottom line, but obviously tougher on the pass traveler.

FlyingBourbon,

Haven't you heard? F the pass traveller. That has been the status quo for a decade. Amazingly its actually getting worse. Just don't tell me how great my bennies are while micturating on my head.

BTW, great handle! Lets talk Bourbon, I'll go first...

1. W.L Weller Special Reserve
2. Blantons
3. Rare Bird
4. Pretty much anything from Buffalo Trace
5. Pretty much anything
6. Pappy is too darn expensive for me. Those bucks will be needed for cheap bourbon, bologna sandwiches and bait after I retire.

I like your style.

1.Weller 12, hard to find now but I stocked up before it got popular
2.EH Taylor Barrel Proof
3.Blanton's
4.Elijah Craig 12, age statement is going away and haven't tried new stuff yet
5.Elmer T Lee, down to my last 2 bottles
6.I actually scored a bottle of Rip Van Winkle 10 and 12 at msrp, not gonna lie, they are awesome, but not enough for secondary market prices

Honestly I'll drink whatever but Buffalo Trace does make some damn fine bourbon.

I like Elmer T Lee. Bought a bunch last year this time for Xmas Gifts. I'm down to my last two bottles.

At one point I had over a case of W. L. Weller SR, but it seems to have slowly disappeared! I had a buddy (a former pilot who lost his medical - go figure!) working at the state store. Through him I could access the states inventory computer and hit the stores near me. A bottle here, a bottle there and pretty soon you've got over a case. Now, its almost impossible to find in Virginia. I understand that its only going to be sold by lottery from this point forward and that's a shame. Oddly enough, I see it every time I go to Canada!

I'm fond of Angels Envy as well. And, I'm pretty quite happy with some of the more plebian mass market bourbons.

I find many of the expensive and exotic single barrel / batch bourbons too hot for my taste. IE, Eagle Rare, Bookers, etc. Hell, I don't even like Makers Mark. I'll drink it, but I no longer buy it.

Each summer we go to a bourbon fest and more often than not, I don't care for small distillery bourbons. It seems as though you pay a premium for that label, yet I don't enjoy sipping it as much, so what's the point? Of course I used to drink Dickel and Old Crow, so I may have ruined my taste buds!

Think I'll go fill my tumbler. Be well!

Oddly enough, Weimax liquor store on Broadway in Burlingame has Weller. I usually have good luck passing through. Buffalo Trace as well.

If you guys are into Wheated Bourbons and Pappy 'cousins' I highly suggest Larceny Bourbon. At ~$20 a bottle even the lowliest turboprop FO can indulge!!

oldmako 12-06-2016 04:33 PM

My brother gave me a bottle of Larceny last Xmas. Delightful.
