Sorry Probe SEA wasn't held open because of senior pilots. It was held open because the Company couldn't make a decision as it dwindled down and was given to Alaska.

SEA was a large base at one time for lUAL because the west coast north south market belonged to lUAL back in the day. Evan lCAL before Frank had a base there.

Oh well this VB thing always sounds good, especially to commuters, but will it be an ugly mess?

How do bids for new seats work?
Can a more senior pilot bid the flying in this VB and get PS commute to it?
Who picks up the reserve coverage?

Basically a lot of isssues!

SEA was never a large base. I was based there on the guppy and the 777. It was always one of our smallest. The 777 had 1 flight a day to NRT, which never justified the base. I flew with a member of the MEC based there who bragged about how they pulled off the 777 base is SEA.

A VB might work for DAL as they are structured differently. They have one gigantic pilot domicile less than an hours flight to most cities in FL. They have very frequent service to a lot of those cities. I can't think of a base/VB city that matches that with UAL. LAS maybe. But SFO and LAX combined aren't as big as DAL's pilot domicile in ATL.

SEA was an important base before your day and large relative to what it flew.

They had 727, DC8, DC10, DC6, DC7,...

You are basically modern history and I believe know the ALPA local rep , first name starts with J, you are talking about. He always had the pilot's best at heart but maybe was a bit full of his capabilities.

Trust the problem in SEA was management and their lack of decision ability. They even considered pulling out of DEN during BK.

Before you made a blanket statement about pilots moving to Florida....did you consider that some may have lived there... their entire life and might have all of their extended family there...?

I am sure many Floridian commuters moved to Florida after being hired ....but not "all"

You flew at United when we had DC-6's and 7's? I am humbled.

Wait a minute, United retired it's DC-7's in 1964 and DC-6's in 1970.

Uncle Clay used to let me sit in the Cockpit enroute from Seattle to Los Angeles in the DC-7. Things were different back then.
