Trip trade branching logic
 

Got an introduction/explanation of trip trade branching logic...I'm not pretending to always be the sharpest tool in the shed and I'm looking for some input...
In short, I had a request in to trade my 2 day trip for a 4 day starting on the same day. Another pilot junior to me had a request in for the same trip. This guy is 500+ numbers junior to me....he got the trade.
The explanation was that in order for a third pilot senior to me to get his trade, ( for a whole different trip), the trip that I desired had to be given to a the junior guy...
Hope I'm not the only one who has a problem with this blatant disregard of seniority...

You're not the only one. I tried to pick up a trip and it went to a junior pilot. I inquired and was told branching as well. I peeked at Crew Companion just before the run and it indicated I was the most senior pilot interested in it. I'm guessing some pdr's and eventual resolutions will be needed.

Ditto.. has happened to me a few times. While I agree that the senior pilot should get what he wants, I have to question if the system runs correctly since we all know about IT issues within the STT.

Unfortunately, until there is some way to see how the branching worked, we will just have to accept it.
Company isn't going to put any time and energy into it since trips are covered.
Union (probably) won't put any energy into it as they will just point to the company.

I just spoke with trip trade desk. I found out the following. I tried to pick up a trip in open time via STT. A junior pilot to me got it because he had something a senior pilot to me wanted via a trade. The senior pilot to me didn't and doesn't want the trip i want and has no request in for it. The system however gave the trip to the junior pilot to facilitate a separate trade with the senior pilot.

I could have understood if the senior pilot wanted the trip I wanted, got it, then traded it in a separate trade, seconds later. At least he/she owns it momentarily. But in my case, and most cases, the senior pilot never knew the trip in question was even open/available.

Have had this happen a couple of times. Basically the computer runs the trades in seniority order. So if it's able to award a Pilot senior to you his/her trip trade, it's going to do it. Sometimes that trade requires a cascade of trading that might include a pilot junior to you getting the trip you wanted; but that was the only way to execute the senior pilots trade. Then the system moves down to the next Pilot, which means your desired trip may now be gone as part of an already executed trade.

Kind of sucked when it happened to me, but in the end, I don't know how else you would do it. You can't deny the senior pilots trade just because it causes an issue later on just so you (junior to said Pilot) can get your desired trade.

So a pilot senior to you gets a trade they wanted (via however the branching worked) but you think it's a blatant disregard of seniority? :confused:

The senior pilots trade request took precedence over yours, it just so happens that a pilot junior to you was needed to facilitate it.

"We" wanted a seniority based trip trade system, well "we" got one.

Branching takes seniority to a level not seen in PBS or vacation awarding. Branching should take into account some form of ownership of the trip in question.

Not true. There is "global feasibility" in PBS.

So how do you suggest this works? A senior person can't get their trade just because doing so would award the trip you wanted to someone junior to you. So then they (senior) don't get their trade, but you (junior) do? Something tells me that wouldn't sit well with you if all of a sudden a trade executed below for a junior pilot.

FWIW, there have probably been times when YOU have gotten a trade into a trip via branching that someone senior to you wanted.
