Jumpseating with Skis

Is there a way to jumpseat with checked bags -- specifically skis? I know I can list as a non-rev to check the skis in but if I have to use the jumpseat will my skis make the flight or will they stay behind as though I was bumped to the next flight?
To add to the issue, I'm planning to go from EWR to SFO then to Vancouver to ski. Is there any way to get the skis checked in all the way to YVR if I have to occupy the actual jumpseat for the first leg? The connection in SFO might not be long enough to wait at baggage claim for the skis in SFO and then recheck them (only 1.5 hours).
Trying not to pay for the UAdiscount if I don't have to
Thanks

Are you a United Employee? If so, just list non-rev and check your bags. Check them in with the porter outside; when he comments that your bags are "wait listed", show him your id and explain that you'll be riding the jump seat if need be and just check them all the way through. BTW, just leaving Whistler tomorrow morning to go back to EWR .. great place to ski ;)

Cool. Just worried that if I list non-rev then have to jumpseat the system will show that I'm not on the plane with my original record locator and they wont load my skis

I jump seated and non-reved from SFO to Panama with connection in Houston. Didn't get charged any extra baggage fees for my surfboard (checked in with United ticket agent)... They give you a tracking slip for your baggage... it'll get to you eventually - worked perfect with me.

Have fun!

My skis got trashed pretty hard, I rent. Bring my boots and make it easy.

Ski rentals are pretty reasonable and definitely fall on the plus side of the hassle vs. reward scale.

Added benefit that you can often rent "demo" level skis of the latest and greatest models. Boots as well.

You can check bags as a jumpseater. You can also list for a seat and check your bags on that reservation with a jumpseat listing as the backup. If you end up needing the jumpseat to make it on, just explain to the gate agent that you have checked bags under your non-rev listing. They seem pretty good about getting your bags put on when doing this.

It gets complicated when coming back to the states from an international destination, due to picking the bags up and clearing customs/immigration at point of debarcation, if you end up flying into a different city. Vancouver shouldn't be a problem, since they speak the same language, and can get the bags switched to a different flight.
I'm currently in Paris, trying to get home from my ski trip.

Additionally, you clear US Customs IN Vancouver before departing rather than at your destination.
